Herts research project wins prestigious CJA Award for Research Excellence
The project, led by Laura Abbott, Professor of Maternal Health and Criminal Justice at the University of Hertfordshire in partnership with the charity Birth Companions and a lived experience team, has shed light on the often-overlooked narratives of mothers navigating complex legal and social challenges. Its findings have already influenced policy discussions and inspired new approaches to supporting families impacted by incarceration.
The CJA Research Excellence Award acknowledges the Lost Mothers Project’s teams work in implementing rigorous inquiry and innovation to have significant impact on advancing understanding and driving positive change within the criminal justice system.
Professor Abbott said:
“I am absolutely over the moon for us for winning this award! The Lost Mothers Project represents the hard work of a collective of incredible women and organisations and we dedicate our award to all those women who bravely shared their experiences of separation within the criminal justice system with us. Together, we are amplifying their voices and helping to shape new understandings of motherhood and justice.”
Professor Wendy Wills, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at the University of Hertfordshire, said:
“We are incredibly proud of Professor Abbott and her team for receiving this prestigious award. This research exemplifies the University’s commitment to tackling real-world challenges and making a tangible difference to society. This project not only advances academic understanding but also drives meaningful change for women and families experiencing the criminal justice system.”
The CJA Award for Research Excellence is the latest in a series of accolades achieved by Lost Mothers Project team. This includes Professor Abbott being twice named Vice-Chancellor's Researcher of the Year at the University of Hertfordshire, and also being shortlisted for the Research and Innovation Impact Award at the 2025 University Alliance (UA) Awards for her work on the project.
