Scholarships, grants and bursaries

At Herts, we want to empower you to realise your potential. That's why we're committed to providing extensive financial support through a range of non-repayable scholarships, grants, bursaries and prizes.

  • Scholarships are usually a sum of money granted to a student to support their studies, often because of prior merit (e.g. academic; sporting; musical achievement)
  • Bursaries are usually a financial award granted to a student on the basis of financial need, or on the basis of belonging to a disadvantaged or under-represented group as recognised in the University’s Access and Participation Plan (please note that ‘scholarship’ and ‘bursary’ are often interchangeable terms, and some bursaries are competitive).
  • Grants can be similar to bursaries. They are usually a form of financial aid awarded based on meeting specific criteria.
  • Prizes are usually financial rewards based on academic performance or achievement determined by exam boards or a panel of academics.

Usually, how these financial awards are spent is at the discretion of the selected students: this means you can spend the money on fees, textbooks, housing or other living expenses as you choose.
