My passion and drive as Dean is to make sure our students have a really good experience and that they are enabled to learn, and to succeed.
Also important to me is our commitment to transforming lives. This is shared across the University but in the School of Education it means we focus not just on building our students’ confidence, but also on how we can give back to society and make a difference to people’s lives.
The opportunities we offer include studying abroad for six months – including in Australia, Canada, the USA and Malaysia - while our partnerships in China enable us to offer a final year exchange programme for early childhood teaching.
Studying with us you’ll be able to gain extra qualifications such as signing for the deaf or first aid, or take part in volunteering programmes. We’re also exploring opportunities for internships to help with school projects in Uganda and India.
All this means you’ll leave with more than a degree. While the School is a leading regional provider of Initial Teacher Education (ITE), not everyone who studies with us will go on to be a teacher. Studying early childhood education will equip you to go into management roles in child care businesses, while our BA Education Studies is a great foundation for working in administration in universities or large schools, or as an education officer in museums.
My background is in primary education and early childhood – I started as an infant school teacher and was head of a children’s centre before coming to Herts. Many of the staff have been head teachers or had leadership roles in the sector, so we take a practitioner-based approach to everything we do.
Your course will reflect the social, political and technological changes taking place in education – we’re currently looking at how we can include outdoor education, and also address mental health and young people.
Even if you’re not doing a teacher training degree you’ll go on placements, to give a context to your learning. We are constantly assessing and innovating to ensure our students are in the best position to succeed.
