Apply for an online course
Before you apply
Check that you have the correct entry requirements for the course you want to study by visiting the course page.
If you do not have the formal entry requirements, but you feel you have equivalent qualifications or professional experience, you can still apply for online study in the normal way.
Please provide detailed evidence of your relevant (professional) experience in a separate document attached to your application form.
We are not able to make informal judgements about equivalent qualifications and experience, eg. via email. Instead we require a formal application so we have enough information to consider each case fully.
How to apply
To apply for an online programme, you will need to complete an online application form. Please go to the individual course page you want to apply for, and you will find the relevant application form under the 'How to apply' tab.
Please attach the following when submitting your application form:
- A copy of your qualification transcripts
- GCSE English Language at grade C or above / Evidence of your English Language competence if English is not your first language (e.g. IELTS)
- GCSE Maths at grade C or above or equivalent
- A personal statement
- A copy of your passport
- 1 academic or professional reference (except for MSc Mental Health Recovery and Social Inclusion - see additional requirements below)
Include the word 'Application' in the subject line when you email your application form and supporting materials to ApplyUHOnline@herts.ac.uk
Professional reference requirement for Mental Health Recovery and Social Inclusion
If you are applying for a course in Mental Health Recovery and Social Inclusion, we will require both an academic reference AND a professional reference to support your involvement in Mental Health services.
If you have some experience in mental health but cannot provide these references or academic achievements please contact us to discuss.
Employment history requirement for Master of Public Health
If you are applying for the Master of Public Health course, please make sure you fill out the employment history field or attach a CV to show your involvement in the Public Health services.
Submitting a portfolio when applying for MA Graphic Design or MA Illustration
If you are applying for one of our creative arts courses, please submit your portfolio as a link, to either a personal web portfolio or to a personal page on a public portfolio site, such as Behance or Pinterest. The portfolio should contain annotations, explaining the concept behind each project.
When to apply
The application deadline is:
- 15 July 2017 for our September 2017 intake.
- 15 November 2017 for our January 2018 intake.
Please note: Some courses only have a September intake, please check the online distance learning course page for details.

What happens next
We will make an offer based on the information you send us, so make sure that you send us all the appropriate information in as much detail as you can. It takes approximately two weeks for you to receive an answer.
