Agriculture, food and veterinary sciences
The Agriculture, Food and Veterinary Sciences (AFVS) REF Unit was established in 2011 within the School of Life and Medical Sciences (LMS).
Our mission is to establish the University of Hertfordshire as a leading, internationally renowned centre for research into the secure and sustainable production of food for nourishing diverse populations.
The Unit also provides leadership for “Food”, one of the University’s six interdisciplinary research themes introduced in 2016.
Researchers operate within three AFVS research groups that align to the Unit’s core strengths
The Unit's work is based in the School of Life and Medical Sciences, and is carried out primarily in three areas:
- crop protection and climate change
- agriculture and environmental management
- food policy, nutrition and dietetics.
Bruce Fitt is coordinator of the University of Hertfordshire Agriculture, Food and Veterinary Sciences REF Unit, leads the Crop Protection and Climate Change research group and is joint head of CAFEM Research.
His research focuses on control of arable crop diseases, especially through breeding for resistance against the causal pathogens, in relation to climate change, in collaboration with industry partners.
