Important information


The University takes your health, safety and wellbeing very seriously. We are responsible for, and are confident that we can provide, a safe and enjoyable environment in your accommodation that you will remember for years to come. We are in uncertain and fluid times as a result of COVID-19, and in order to provide you with the safest living environment we may need to introduce regulations and restrictions as to how halls of residence can be used. For example, we may need to limit the number of people who can use kitchen and laundry facilities at any one time, or restrict or prevent access to social spaces including common rooms. We will always try to keep disruption to a minimum, and restrictions will only be in place where it is necessary to maintain a safe environment. Clear signage will be in all areas so that you know what is expected, and all students and staff will need to adhere to any revised operations in place.

Your deposit

A deposit of £150 is required for all types of accommodation during the 2020/21 academic year. For 2021/22, this has been reduced to £100. This is a security deposit which is retained throughout your stay.

Your deposit is held for the duration of your license, to cover any rent arrears, damages and additional charges* you may have incurred.

You will receive an inventory when you arrive which we encourage you to complete and return. This will help the process at the end of the license period should there be any dispute.

Your room should be returned in the same condition it was provided at the start of the license period, allowing for fair wear and tear.

Deposits will be refunded within 28 days if there are no deductions to be made. You will be notified of any proposed deductions, in which case please allow up to 8 weeks, for your remaining deposit to be refunded pending any dispute.

* additional charges: these may be fines incurred in accordance with UPR SA13, loss of key card etc; as stated within your license agreement and the Student Guide to Living On Campus.

Be a good neighbour

The University has a major physical presence in Hatfield and with it the potential to make an impact, for better or worse, on the town’s environment. We take this responsibility very seriously and expect you, as a member of the University community, to share it. When you are out and about, we expect you to be a responsible citizen. Students are expected to behave responsibly and respectfully towards our neighbours and the local community and do nothing that might damage the University’s reputation.

Living in halls

We hope that you will be happy in your new accommodation. Please remember the key to enjoyable communal living is to show consideration to those living around you. In order to ensure safe and harmonious communal living, residents are expected to show courtesy and respect to those with whom they are sharing facilities, their neighbours and all University staff and visitors.

To make sure everyone knows what is expected, the University has a code of conduct for residents.

Living in the local community

As students living in private accommodation you are part of the local community and therefore should respect those around you. Introduce yourself to your neighbours and try to develop an amicable relationship with them. Being considerate of your neighbours will make your and their experience of living in the same community more enjoyable.
