An Introduction to Adobe InDesign

About the course

Back to course listing

Due to the corona virus we will be constantly reviewing and updating our short course provision. As the situation is under constant review, we would advise checking the website for further updates or alternatively contact the short course office for further information.

This course is intended to give you an overview of the basic principles, features and essential tools of the software programme Adobe InDesign. InDesign is a layout and desktop publishing program which is compatible with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and forms part of the Adobe Design Suite. It’s an important aspect of any designer’s set of digital tools.

InDesign is ideal for people who want to create their own graphic design work, incuding posters, publications, leaflets, flyers, business cards and other forms of publicity. Used alongside Illustrator and Photoshop, it is a powerful software package, allowing you to create design layouts which are ready for print or web, to professional standards. Our course will enable you to get the most out of this software.

After an initial introduction to the software, the course will cover:

  • The principles of design and layout.
  • Setting up your page.
  • Using layouts and grids.
  • Inserting and distributing images.
  • Understanding and using text, font, spacing and sizes.
  • Creating basic posters, letters and leaflets.
  • Preparing your documents for printing and creating .pdf files and other file formats.

By the end of the six sessions, you will be able to use your design ability to layout a range of documents. The course is run by an expert tutor who will offer you advice, insight and practical experience, combined with up-to-the-minute software skills to enable you to create your own designs and artwork to a professional standard, ready for print and publishing.

Professional guidance is essential to get the most out of this complex programme, allowing you to harness the power and potential of Illustrator. If you wish to explore our 6 week Illustrator course explains vector drawings and perfectly complements our ‘InDesign’ course.
