New Book Explores the Lives, Livelihoods and Moral Dilemmas of Victorian Doctors in Colchester

A vivid and original new work of local history, Colchester’s Victorian Doctors: The Business of Healing by Jane Pearson, will be published in June 2026, shedding fresh light on the men who practised medicine in one Essex town during the nineteenth century – and on the uneasy balance between compassion, commerce and professional ambition.

Drawing on extensive archival research, newspapers, census records and medical society papers, Pearson traces how Colchester’s doctors lived, worked and adapted in a period of rapid medical, social and political change. Far from being detached figures of authority, these practitioners emerge as small businessmen, civic actors and sometimes controversial campaigners, negotiating epidemics, poverty, industrial accidents, military medicine and the slow professionalisation of their trade.

Set against the backdrop of Victorian Colchester the book examines how national developments such as the Medical Act of 1858, germ theory and hospital medicine played out on the ground. Pearson explores doctors’ roles in voluntary hospitals, workhouse infirmaries, the army garrison and the care of the poor, asking how much real influence they wielded beyond the bedside.

Written during the Covid-19 pandemic, the book draws subtle parallels between nineteenth-century and modern experiences of public health, inequality, vaccination, institutional pressure and access to care. Themes such as epidemics, medical costs, professional rivalry and the shifting doctor–patient relationship resonate powerfully today.
