NEW PROGRAMME for our May concert.

The orchestra will take us on an exhilarating journey through the French countryside with Ravel, Maurice and Bizet, before treating us to a symphony by Belgium’s most celebrated composer Cesar Franck.

The concert will open with Maurice Ravel’s beautiful Pavane pour une Infante Défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess). We welcome soloist Huw Wiggin in the charming Tableaux de Provence for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra by French female composer Paule Maurice, before returning to Southern France to close the first half with a selection of Bizet’s ever popular L’Arlesienne Suites, based on French folk themes.

Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D minor forms the concert’s second half in celebration of the bicentenary of the composer’s birth (born 1822). A renowned Belgian-born composer of the Romantic period who spent much of his life in Paris, Franck contributed several pieces that have entered the standard classical repertoire, including this his most well-known work.
