To celebrate Black History Month, we take a look at four striking works by Black artists in the University of Hertfordshire Art Collection. Ranging from sculpture to wood relief and textile work, the artworks share a tactile quality that awakens a sense of touch – be it cold metal, warm wood, or soft fabric.

Each piece carries its own narrative and is reflective of today’s contemporary culture. Some of the artists have drawn from their heritage to make art that is biographical and political; others have produced work completely separate from issues of race.

The four artists – Khaliya Lewis, Mary LuaLua, Zoe Lynch and Vusumuzi Michael Mlambo – have all graduated from the University of Hertfordshire, between 2009 and 2019.
