Health professions and social work
Subject intro
Diagnostic radiography
Diagnostic radiographers play a vital role in healthcare. They produce patient centred imaging services for the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and disease. Our academics are all registered practitioners and they’ll teach you the knowledge and clinical techniques you’ll need to become a skilled and competent diagnostic radiographer. You’ll benefit from our dedicated X-ray rooms, CT scanner and computer laboratories. You'll use radiographic images to study human anatomy, physiology and pathology. You’ll develop excellent communication skills and learn to work effectively in a team environment, putting the needs of the patient at the centre of everything you do.

Optometry
This distinctive course integrates theory, research, science and clinical practice right from the start. What makes it unique is that it’s the first optometry degree to incorporate the College of Optometrists’ pre-registration period within the course. That means that once you graduate, you’ll be a fully registered optometrist. Throughout the course, you’ll have access to the latest specialist laboratories, equipment and simulation facilities, and take part in innovative methods of learning that embed evidence-based practice and knowledge.
Paramedic science
Paramedics are autonomous practitioners, who are often the first point of contact for a patient requiring emergency or urgent healthcare. They work in a variety of settings and deliver patient care in situations that can be complex and highly pressured. This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to manage patients with illness or injury, including assessment and diagnostic skills through to treatment or referral to other healthcare professionals. The course has a strong emphasis on high-quality care, taking into account rapid changes within the profession.
Physiotherapy
The BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy course offers a dynamic approach to the study of physiotherapy and provides you with the problem-solving abilities to become a competent professional physiotherapist. Our courses are well established and are approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). By adopting an integrated thematic approach, our physiotherapy course offers foundation studies in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, therapeutic practice and electrotherapy.
Research and inter-professional working are considered core dimensions of the course and you'll actively undertake and engage with research throughout your studies. Practical skills are developed throughout the programme and are facilitated by the thematic scenario-based approach to learning and teaching, supported by practical laboratory sessions, specialist simulation sessions, small group discussions and tutorials.
Radiotherapy and oncology
Radiotherapy is used in the management of approximately half of patients diagnosed with cancer. It works by utilising radiation at high energies to destroy cancer cells so that a patient can either be cured or have their symptoms alleviated.
This course will enable you to graduate as a therapeutic radiographer eligible for state registration. Therapeutic radiographers are the key clinical practitioners responsible for delivering radiotherapy. You will develop skills related to planning and accurate delivery of radiotherapy using a range of specialised technical equipment.
Social work
Social workers help people find solutions to their problems and live more successfully in their communities. Sometimes this includes helping them confront and manage behaviours that put themselves and others at risk. To succeed, social workers must work not only with service users, but also with their service user’s families and friends, as well as other organisations including the police, NHS and schools. This course covers subjects such as law, partnership working, assessment and interventions, social science, mental health, disabilities, and families and children.
