History, english literature and creative writing

Subject intro

Immerse yourself in history. Investigate past events and analyse their impact on today’s world. At Herts, you’ll be studying at a top history department and be taught from the cutting edge of historical research. You’ll develop a range of skills that are in high demand by employers, including research, critical thinking and the ability to construct effective arguments. We even have an active oral history team, offering a fantastic co-curricular activity for you to gain relevant experience.

We are ranked first among all history departments in the country for the social and cultural impact of our research. Plus, we’re ranked fifth for the overall quality of our research. Our world leading experts have published widely, won prizes for their work, and contribute to national and international television and radio. Our publications include a contribution to Harry Potter: A History of Magic, the companion book to the recent exhibition of the same name at the British Library.

English literature

Study English literature with us and we’ll help you grow from a passionate reader into a critical thinker and literary scholar. You’ll be taught by research-active academics who bring fresh thinking to our accessible and engaging courses. We’ll introduce you to writers who will open doors to contemporary worlds and cultures remote from your own, and help you explore more familiar literature in ways that challenge your preconceptions. You’ll gain an understanding of literary history and be encouraged to explore literature through different viewpoints. Wherever your journey of discovery takes you, from crime fiction to children’s literature, you’ll have the chance to tailor your degree to reflect your own interests.

Creative writing

Creative Writing is more than just writing stories. It’s about learning how to engage your readers, how to capture their attention. It’s about how to communicate with others; to help them see the world through your eyes, while still giving them space to form their own views. Our creative writing courses encourage you to explore and develop your own creative writing practice. We offer a stimulating and supportive environment in which to experiment with your ideas, hone your craft and understand a wide variety of texts. You’ll be taught by lecturers who are themselves award-winning practitioners and who bridge the gap between creative and academic approaches to writing. You’ll graduate with skills needed by a variety of sectors, including publishing, marketing, education and business.

Foreign languages

In the global world of today, we believe it is becoming increasingly important to study a second language. Speaking a second language, as well as having a qualification, will give you a competitive edge when job hunting. We offer a choice of five languages and most of our courses offer the possibility to study one.
