Registration and enrolment

Registration is the process through which you:

  • Agree to be a student member of the University
  • Enrol on your programme of study
  • Agree to abide by the University’s rules and regulations
  • Agree to become liable for tuition fee payments (in line with the University’s fees and funding policy).

All students must register with the University at the start of every academic year of their course. However, the process differs depending on whether you are starting a new programme of study, (new students) or are continuing on the same programme of study (continuing students).

New students

In order to register with the University you must first:

  • Have received a formal unconditional offer of admission that you have firmly accepted.
  • Have your fee status confirmed. Usually this will be determined as part of the admissions process. If your fee status is unclear the University will contact you for further information.
  • Have set-up your University account (details of your account will be sent to you by email as soon as your place to study is confirmed).

Stage 1 – Student Self Enrolment (SSE)

Stage1 registration is an online process. You will receive an email inviting you to complete stage 1 registration, normally around 40 days before your course is due to start. You should follow the instructions in your invitation email and upload a photo to be used on your student record and your ID card.

Stage 2

Most students starting a new programme of study will need to attend a face to face registration session to complete their enrolment. You must bring appropriate ID with you and any relevant documentation relating to how your tuition fees will be funded. More information about what to bring to your registration session can be found on Ask Herts.

At your registration session, in addition to enrolling on your course you will receive:

  • Your student ID card (if you do not upload a suitable photo before you arrive we will take a picture for your ID card on the day).

A registration session for all students on each course will be included as part of each course induction. Make sure you go to your scheduled session along with your course mates. If you are a new international student you may have the opportunity to complete your registration in person during the overseas orientation week before your course begins.

Continuing students

All continuing students need to re-enrol every academic year.

Stage 1 – Student Self Enrolment (SSE)

You will receive an email inviting you to complete stage 1 registration online, normally in mid August. Please complete stage 1 before you return to campus. Nursing and Midwifery returning students will receive their email once they have gone through the progression board, please contact for confirmation of when your board sits.

Stage 2

For all returning students continuing on a programme of study the process for stage two registration simply requires you to swipe your ID card at any of our electronic readers on campus. Your student record will update to fully registered status within 24 hours.
