Fees and Funding

Studying for a degree is a big financial commitment. Whether you are coming to university for the first time or are beginning a postgraduate degree, make sure you understand the fees associated with your course and the University’s Fees and Finance Policy.

Visit our dedicated fees and funding page to find out more.

Applying for student finance

Students from the UK can apply for government loans to help pay for their tuition fees and living costs.

If you are coming to study an undergraduate course you can apply for a tuition fee loan, paid directly to the University to cover the cost of your fees, and a maintenance loan, paid directly to you at the start of each term. The amount you can borrow as a maintenance loan depends on your circumstances.

If you are starting your course in September 2021 you have probably already submitted your application for student finance. Don’t worry if you haven’t though, it’s not too late. The sooner you apply the more likely everything will be sorted before you start your course. More information about applying for student finance can be found in our student finance section.

You can also use the government's student finance calculator to estimate how much funding you may be able to get.

If you are studying for a postgraduate course you can apply for a postgraduate masters loan or a postgraduate doctoral loan. These loans are designed to help you with the cost of your tuition fees and your living costs and are paid directly to you.

Visit the government's site for more information about funding for postgraduate study.

International students

Watch our brief guide to the tuition fees and other costs for international students below and gain an understanding of how our international scholarships work.

Visit our international portal for more information on fees and scholarships for those coming from abroad to study at the University of Hertfordshire.

Self-funding

If you are planning to pay your tuition fees yourself, make sure you are familiar with how and when to pay.

If you need help with either your accommodation or tuition fee payments, please contact the Student Account Management team in the Student Centre at the earliest opportunity, as the University may impose sanctions for non payment of fees which may affect your studies.

Scholarships and Bursaries

The University believes that anyone who works hard or who shows great talent should be encouraged and rewarded. The University therefore offers a range of non-repayable scholarships to help you with the cost of studying.

As well as our scholarships, the University also offers the UH undergraduate bursary. This is aimed at helping eligible students in their first year at university.

Financial tips

The University have also invested in a tool, Blackbullion, for you to learn the right financial skills to help you make the right financial decisions for your future. Blackbullion is free to all University of Hertfordshire students.

Learn more about Blackbullion here.

Hertfordshire Students’ Union Advice and Support Centre can also advise students about how to budget and manage their money.

Bank accounts

All students will need a UK bank account so that your money is kept securely and so that you can receive student finance, transfer money, pay bills by standing order or direct debit and use a debit card to buy goods or withdraw money from an ATM (Automated Teller Machine).

If you are from the UK you can usually open a student bank account once you have a confirmed place to study, if you have applied for university through UCAS, your UCAS status codes will help the banks to check you are eligible for their student accounts. You’ll probably want to have an account in place before you start your course so you can receive your maintenance loan. There are lots of different student accounts offering different deals and benefits, it’s worth shopping around to find the account that’s best for you.

If you are an international student you won’t be able to open a bank account in the UK until you are fully registered on your course.
