What is registration and do I need to do it?
Registration is an important step in joining us at Herts. It means you are officially a member of our University community. It’s where your documents are checked, and you are issued with your student ID card.
All students need to register – new students as well as those who are returning to their studies.
Make sure you complete registration as soon as you can.
-
How do I register as a new student?
- Set up a student record account – You will have received an email containing your username and, asking you to re-set your password for the University.
- Complete online registration (Stage 1) – Next, you’ll receive an email with a link to your student record. You’ll need to confirm a few details, including your intent to study by accepting the University of Hertfordshire Terms and Conditions. You will also need to upload a photo of yourself, for your student ID Card.
- Upload documents (Stage 2) – You’ll receive an email with a link to the registration documents portal where you need to upload a few things. Find out more about what you’ll need to provide. There is a 6MB limit and documents must be a pdf or jpeg.
- Apply for funding – If you’re a UK/EEA/Switzerland student, remember you’ll need to apply for funding if you haven’t done so already.
Once you’ve completed the steps above, our Student Records and Enrolment team will review your uploaded documents and complete your registration. It may take a few days for your status to change to ‘Registered’. There’s nothing else you need to do, unless we find any required documents are missing – we’ll let you know if that’s the case.
-
What if I haven’t received my email to register?
If you haven’t received your initial email to start the registration process, please email ask@herts.ac.uk.
If you have already contacted us then please be patient. During busy periods, it may take a little longer to get to your email, but we’ll be in touch as quickly as we can.
-
I’ve completed stage 1 registration, what do I do now?
There are a few steps to our registration process. Once you’ve completed Stage 1, you’ll be sent an email to upload your documents. Please don’t forget this important step as we need to check through these before we can fully register you as a student.
If you’ve completed stage 1 and have not received an email to upload your documents, please make sure you have completed your Student Record. If your status says ‘pre-registered’, please email ask@herts.ac.uk.
If you have already contacted us, then please be patient. During busy periods, it may take a little longer to get to your email, but we’ll be in touch as quickly as we can.
-
My face-to-face classes don’t show times or locations, how do I find this information?
Please check your emails (including your junk folder) as we may have emailed this information separately. If not, please check your joining instructions as these include multiple documents including information about your timetable.
-
My joining instructions are blank / I can’t log in to the portal, what do I do?
You should be able to access the joining instruction portal with just your student ID number. Please visit https://joining.herts.ac.uk/.
-
If I can’t see my timetable, how do I find out where I go on my first day?
This information is in your joining instructions or please visit https://joining.herts.ac.uk/. You don’t need to be registered to be able to see your timetable as you can see this on StudyNet once you have received your joining instructions. This will show your core modules.
Guidance on how to subscribe to your timetable and module calendars using the ical feed.
-
If I haven't registered can I still move into my on campus accommodation?
Yes, you can. This is a separate process and doesn’t impact your ability to move into our on-campus accommodation.
-
I’m still waiting for my registration to be completed, what should I do?
We are currently processing high volumes of registrations, please be patient, we will get to your registration as soon as we can. Please don’t worry if you’ve not yet had confirmation that your registration has been completed. You do not need to be registered on your course to start your studies.
-
What should I do? My student finance status hasn’t changed to registered so my maintenance loan is going to be late.
We are working as fast as we can to make sure that everyone gets their maintenance loans.
Please visit our funding pages on Ask Herts for more information.
-
What if I can’t upload my documents?
Please check the size of the documents you are trying to upload. The maximum we can accept is 6MB and it must be a JPEG or a PDF format.
-
I can’t log into the document portal to upload my documents.
Please check you are using the right username when logging into the portal. It should be in this format “username@herts.ac.uk”.

How do I know I have uploaded my documents successfully?
If you check the “Uploaded Documents” section of the portal, it will show if you have successfully uploaded your documents.
-
How long do I need to wait after uploading my documents before I am registered?
Registration may take a few days to process as the University is working through high numbers of registrations.
-
How and when do I get my ID Card?
Home/EEA/Switzerland students
Please collect your ID card at your earliest convenience from either Ask de Havilland or Ask Hutton, you need the physical card to use the Learning Resource Centres and UNO buses and should have the card in your possession at all times when on campus.
International students
Please collect your ID card when you collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
What to bring with you:
ID cards can only be collected in person and you must bring another form of photographic ID with you. You cannot be issued with an ID card until you are fully registered.
If you lose your ID card, you will need to get a replacement card.
-
Where can I find my timetable?
Your timetable for the 2021-22 academic year will be available in StudyNet from 10 January 2022.
Watch our video guide on how to navigate your timetable and link your timetable with your personal calendar on your computer or mobile device once it’s available.
-
Why is my timetable empty?
You may not see a complete timetable until you are fully registered and enrolled on all of your modules.
For new students, registration will be complete no earlier than 14 days before the start date of your course and requires you uploading your documents and having them approved by the Student Registration and Enrolment Team. For new and returning students modules may be added during or after the registration process.
If there is an issue with either your Registration or module enrolments, please contact the Ask Herts Hubs at ask@herts.ac.uk who will update your student record.
Once enrolled, your timetable should be updated within 2 days.
-
My timetable is not showing my registered modules correctly. What should I do?
Please note that it will take approximately 2 working days from your module enrolment to allocation on timetabled activities. Additionally, removal of any timetabled activities for a module you are no longer enrolled on will take place overnight so should disappear from your timetable the next day. If, after this time, your timetable is not showing the modules you are registered on correctly, please contact the Helpdesk on 01707 284678 or email helpdesk@herts.ac.uk.
-
When will I receive my student finance?
Once you have fully registered with us, we will then confirm this with the Student Loans Company.
The earliest date that the Student Loans Company will release payment is the first day of your course date, which is confirmed in your confirmation letter. Once you are confirmed as a registered student with us it can then take up to three working days for your payments to arrive.
