With its focus firmly on how the media works and how to work in the media, our Mass Communications programme combines practical and theoretical knowledge to give you a valuable range of skills, knowledge and experience. Through the course, we strive to provide a rich learning experience, combining traditional seminars and lectures with the latest digital and online technologies.

During your First Year you will choose Media together with three other subject pathways from the following list, establishing a strong foundation in communications:

Many of our undergraduate students continue their studies with us choosing to specialise further with a postgraduate degree in MA Journalism and Media Communications.

My studies provided me with the opportunity to interact and communicate with a wide number of individuals from all backgrounds and experiences. I learnt how to be self-sufficient, motivated and pursue all opportunities for growth. The most useful thing about my course was the wide array of module choices, allowing me to tailor my course to my specific needs in journalism and public relations.

Our teaching team

The programme is taught by leading academics and experience media-professionals to ensure you graduate with the practical skills and knowledge to succeed in the competitive media industries. They will help you become knowledgeable in a range of fields with practical and theoretical experiences based on real-life scenarios.

In addition we run a series of guest lectures with experts from the creative industries to help you network and make contacts. This year we had Bill Coles, tabloid journalist and author of new book "Red Top", Phil Hall, former News of the World editor and media commentator and Jon Henley, Guardian journalist and foreign correspondent along with many other practitioners from the world of journalism and media.

Student work

The programme is very practical giving you the opportunity to develop a range of work based on your area of specialism which can be used upon graduation for your portfolio. If you study film, you will learn how to make a short film. If you opt for journalism, you will learn to write like a journalist.

The course allowed me to study a variety of different modules which allowed me to gain a range of different skills essential to my current role and to develop a lot of creative confidence.
