Freshers' checklist

Check that you have completed the following to ensure that your arrival at Hertfordshire gets off to a flying start.

Apply for student finance or pay your deposit/tuition fees

Read our handy money advice guide for more information about this as well as other tips for how to manage your finances.

Arrange your accommodation

Read our guides to the various accommodation options and help available to you for more information.

Read the correspondence we sent you

Look out for the various emails we will be sending you:

  • An invitation to apply for on campus accommodation.
  • Joining instructions - with details of the day, time and location of your first attendance at University, important information about the registration process and induction information specific to your course.
  • Online registration email – with instructions on how to complete this step before you arrive.
  • Also, don't forget to check your email junk box, just in case an important email from us has gone there instead.

Set up your University Account

You should have or will shortly receive an email with your University username.

Follow the instructions in this email to set-up your University account.

Register online (stage 1)

You should have or will shortly receive an email inviting you to complete your online (stage 1) registration. Follow the instructions in this email to complete this part of your registration, and upload a photo to be used on your student record and your ID card.

Get your meningitis vaccination

We recommend that all new students get a meningitis vaccination when they start University. You can talk to your GP at home to get this done before you arrive or you can arrange to be vaccinated at our on campus pharmacy once you’re here.

Plan your travel arrangements

Whether you are moving yourself and your belongings into accommodation (on campus or in the local area) or you are going to commute to the University on a daily basis, make sure you plan your journey on your first day.

We have prepared some useful travel information on getting to the University you can read here.

Pack important paperwork

There are certain important documents you will need to have with you for your face-to-face registration once you arrive at University so make sure you don’t leave them at home. Details are given in your joining instructions or can be found online, but as a quick guide you should bring:

  • Your passport
  • Payment information (e.g. your Student Loans Company documentation)
  • The confirmation email you receive once you’ve completed the online stage of registration

Talk to our Student Wellbeing team

If you think you have additional needs and might need some help or support during your time with us, we would encourage you to talk to our Student Wellbeing team before you arrive. There is no requirement for you to get in touch, but the team will be happy to help if you need them. Visit our wellbeing page for more information.

Complete our pre-induction course

The University has created a short online induction course to welcome new students and familiarise them with the University. The course is fun (and really useful too) and will give you your first taste of StudyNet. You can access it here.

Thinking about getting a new laptop or smartphone for Uni? Questions about software or books? Take a look at our top library and computing topics before you arrive at UH.

Purchase your Freshers' Week wristband

Hertfordshire Students' Union run lots of fantastic Freshers events in the first week of term. To make the most of Freshers you can buy a wristband which will give you entry to all events without having to buy individual tickets. Wristbands will be available close to the start of term, but keep checking the Students' Union website for updates and to see what last year’s Fresher’s Week was like.
