The University of Hertfordshire Performance Sport Programme has an excellent Sport Scholarship Scheme which provides an extensive range of support services to our elite and talented athletes studying at the University.

All applications to the Sports Scholarship Scheme are considered on an individual basis and will vary between athletes and sports. Priority will be given to our current BUCS Performance Sports – Women’s Football, Men’s & Women’s Futsal, Men’s Basketball, Netball and American Football. Athletes from other team and/or individual sports will be considered on a case-by-case basis but should be representing their sport at a national age group level or above (or an equivalent level where player pathways may differ from sport to sport).

There are a range of benefits available for student-athletes who may receive some or all the following support services:

• gym membership at The Sport Village and The Oval campus gyms
• strength and conditioning from industry leading coaches at Performance Herts
• athlete education workshops covering topics such as nutrition, sport psychology, anti-doping, etc.

Following confirmation of a successful sports scholarship award, the Performance Sport and Scholarships Manager will create a sports scholarship agreement with the student-athlete which details exactly the services and support available.

• available for the first year of your undergraduate programme only
• awarded to financially disadvantaged students who are starting their first undergraduate degree
• the bursary is means tested but you don’t have to apply. The University will be able to identify whether you qualify from your university and student loans company application and will automatically put you forward to receive the funds. Further information on getting means tested can be found on Ask Herts
• if you are eligible to receive the bursary, we will contact you 6-8 weeks after the start of term to let you know. In order to receive payment, you will need to provide your bank details via our secure online system – we will send you a link to do this
• your bursary will be given in two separate instalments of £500. For students starting in September, payment will typically be made between November and April. For students starting in January, two payments will be typically made between February and July.

Eligibility for the 2024/25 academic year

To be eligible for the bursary you must:

• be registered on a full-time University of Hertfordshire undergraduate course delivered directly by the University of Hertfordshire or one of its consortium colleges, studying 120 credit points per academic year
• have a household income of £30,000 or less as assessed by Student Finance England or other relevant awarding body. This will be calculated from your Student Loans Company account, so please ensure you, and where applicable your parent(s) or sponsor, consent to share so that we can see this information. More information and guidance on how to get means tested, can be found on Ask Herts
• be considered a ‘Home’ fee paying student as assessed by the University. Find out more about your fee status.

Please note you will not be eligible for the bursary if:

• you are studying a distance learning course/programme
• you are joining year two or three of a University of Hertfordshire undergraduate programme after transferring to us from another university
• you are studying an initial year or year zero programme prior to your full undergraduate degree. You will be eligible for the bursary (subject to the above conditions) once you have completed your initial year or year zero programme and have progressed to year one of your undergraduate degree.

• awarded in September 2023 to three students studying Events Management within the Hertfordshire Business School
• open to first year students of Black or Minority Ethnic Heritage, with a household income below £25,000
• to apply: eligible students will be invited to fill out a short application form with the winners identified by a panel of academics and events management professionals.

• value: £5,000 (over three years of study: £1,000 in the first year, £2,000 each in the second and third years) with at least one site visit or period of work experience with Jarvis
• awarded every year to one first year student on either the BA Architecture or BEng Civil Engineering or MEng Civil Engineering courses who has achieved 120 UCAS points
• eligible students will fill out a short application form with the winner identified by a panel of academics and donor representatives
• this scholarship will next be open for applications in Semester A of 23/24.

• value: up to £300
• awarded to history students to support visits to archives for dissertation research
• to apply: student will be invited by the School to submit detail of intentions and outline expected costs including travel and photography licenses).

• value: £3,000 (over three years of study: £1,000 in each of the first, second and third years)
• awarded on completion of the previous scholar to one first year full time UK/EU student on the BA Hons Digital Animation course
• on completing Semester A, eligible students will be invited to submit a piece of work which demonstrates what they have learnt during the semester. A panel of academic staff will select the scholarship winner based on the submission and work during the semester
• this scholarship will next be open for applications at the end of Semester A of 23/24.

• value: £3,000 (over three years of study: £1,000 in each of the first, second and third years)
• awarded on completion of the previous scholar to one first year full time UK/EU student on the Music Composition Technology programme or the Music and Sound Technology programme in alternation
• no application process: the scholarship is awarded to the best performing full-time first year student on the selected programme based on Semester A results. This scholarship will next be awarded at the start of Semester B of 24/25.

• value: £3,000 (£1,000 in each academic year)
• awarded every year to a student on the BEd(Hons) Primary Education. Students eligible are those returning to study after a break from formal education and who are a full-time UK/EU student
• to apply: please submit an application in your first year at University
• this scholarship will next be open for applications in Semester A of 2023/24.

• value: £3,000 (over three years of study: £1,000 in each of the first, second and third years)
• awarded on completion of the previous scholar to one first year full time UK/EU student on the BEd programme who can demonstrate an active interest in voluntary activities supporting children in the wider community
• this scholarship will next be open for applications during Semester A of 24/25.

• awarded every year to undergraduate engineering students
• no application required. Nominations for the award are made by the Board of Examiners to the Engineering and Computer Science Prize Committee, which will then select the recipients.

• awarded every year to a top performing undergraduate student studying BEng(Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering
• no application required. Nominations for the award are made by the Board of Examiners to the Engineering and Computer Science Prize Committee, which will then select the recipient.

• value: £2,000 (£500 paid in the first and second year, £1,000 in the final year)
• awarded every year to a UK or EU student studying on any aerospace, automotive, civil or mechanical engineering degree
• to apply: you will be invited to submit an application in your first year at University.

• value: £2,000
• awarded to a BEng Aerospace Engineering student progressing into their second year
• to apply: you will be invited to submit an application during your first year of study. The shortlist of applicants will be interviewed by a judging panel and a winner identified
• this scholarship will next be awarded towards the end of Semester B of 23/24.

• value: £5,000 (over three years of study: £1,000 in the first year, £2,000 each in the second and third years) with at least one site visit or period of work experience with Jarvis

• awarded once every three or four years (after the graduation of the previous scholar) to the most improved UK Full time BEng student at the end of Level 4, decided by the Board of Examiners.
• there is no application process for this scholarship
• this scholarship will next be awarded at the end of Semester B of 23/24.

• value: £150 x three (three prizes of £150 each)
• awarded every year to three winners of a design challenge for all first year Aerospace Engineering students taking the module Introduction to Projects and Design
• the criteria for the design challenge will be set in advance by the module leader and judged by the same
• these prizes will next be open for awarding at the end of Semester B in 22/23.

This scholarship will next be open for applications in Semester B of 23/24.

• value: up to £1,000. The School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science will award prizes annually for students continuing onto the MEng programme

• awarded every year to a final year BSc (Hons) Midwifery with RM student
• no application required. The scholarship recipient will be selected by the Programme Board before the start of each academic year. Students will be judged against their performance in the second-year Lifestyle Diversity and Midwifery Care module and feedback from service users and programme tutors.

• value: £3,000 (£1,000 in each academic year)
• awarded every year to three first year students studying Adult Nursing. Students eligible are those full-time Home students with a household income below £40,000 p.a. at commencement of their first year of study
• to apply: students will be invited to fill out a short application form and winning students will be identified by a panel of academics.

• value: £3,000 (paid in the first year of study)
• awarded every year to one student studying for the BSc Social Work. Students are eligible to apply if they are care-leavers or care-experienced students aged 18-24and have a household income below £25,000 as declared to Student Finance England
• to apply: students will be invited to fill out a short application form and winning students will be identified by a panel of academics.

• value: £3,600 x 2 (over three years of study: £1,200 in each of the first, second and third years)
• awarded on completion of the previous scholar to two first year full time Health and Social Work student with a declared disability, who is returning to study after a minimum break of three years from formal education
• to apply: students will be asked to fill out a short application form which will include questions focussed on demonstrating that the student is making a valuable contribution to society through volunteering and community work; demonstrating that their study is being undertaken to improve their employment prospects; and demonstration of a good record of academic ability and attendance since starting University. Applications will be shortlisted by the donor, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to an informal interview with the donor and a member of the University’s academic staff to complete the selection
• This scholarship will next be open for applications in Semester A 23/24.

• value: payment of tuition fees for up to three years.
• The bursary is open to applicants for the BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiotheraphy course, for whom the course will be a second degree; or who are working as support workers in radiotherapy or cancer services; or who has worked in social care and has volunteered or raised funds for a cancer charity/healthcare provider; or who was in social care at any point during childhood and has volunteered or raised funds for a cancer charity/healthcare provider.

In addition:

• Applicants should have the right to work in the UK and be resident in England.
• Applicants should not be receiving a student loan or other sponsorship to cover the course fees for the programme for which they plan to enrol or have enrolled.
• Applicants should demonstrate that their circumstances prevent them from being able, without support, to  join the course.
• Applicants should be aged 18 or over at the intended start date of the programme.

To apply: applications for the course are made to the University by the normal process and places offered following the normal admissions procedure. For more information on the Valerie Carr Award, including how to apply and deadlines, please go to the College of Radiographers website. Acceptance for the award does not signify a guaranteed place at the University, and vice versa.

• value: £1,500 (paid in the third year)
• awarded every year to a final year student on the LLB Law degree
• to apply: submit an application in your third year at university. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed. The interview panel will consist of School members. Applicants will be judged according to their second year academic achievement and their intention to go into private legal practice
• this scholarship is next open for applications in January 2024.

• value: two students will be awarded £1,500 each
• awarded every year to support two undergraduate law students on the Student Success Programme in their first year of academic study. The scholarship is awarded on merit, but is designed to attract those whose background would give them little acquaintance with university or legal life. This is determined by a short written submission and interview. The application and selection process are not time consuming. All eligible students are encouraged to apply and help with the application process will be given
• to apply: eligible students will be invited to submit applications during their first semester.

• value: £1,000 (paid in the final year)
• awarded every year to a full time undergraduate student on the LLB Law degree
• to apply: the scholarship candidates will be chosen from the top performers on the second year Property Law module. Shortlisted candidates will be called to an interview.

• value: £2,000 (paid in two instalments, £1,000 in the second year and £1,000 in the third year)
• awarded every two years to a first year student on the LLB Law degree
• the successful student will be selected based on the results achieved in the Contract module in Semester B of the first year. The five highest performing students will be invited to meet with a panel of three academic members of staff who will reach a final decision
• this scholarship will next be awarded in the summer of 2024.

• value: training grant of £5,000 per year, with additional funding available for eligible students
• courses include: BSc (Hons) Dietetics
• additional funding may include:
  • parental support of up to £2,000 per year to help with childcare costs
  • specialist subject payment of £1000 per year for students on degrees that struggle recruit
  • an exceptional hardship fund of up to £3,000 per year.

This scholarship is to the value of a 20% tuition fee reduction. It's awarded to University of Hertfordshire undergraduate students who return to study for any postgraduate taught course and research degree at Herts. No application is required, the scholarship will be automatically awarded if you are eligible and your tuition fee will be reduced accordingly.

Terms, conditions and eligibility criteria

The University of Hertfordshire Graduate Scholarship is available to self-funded University of Hertfordshire graduates* (UK/EU and international) for their first full year of full-time or all years of part-time (UK/EU only) postgraduate or research degrees at the University.

The Graduate Scholarship is available to students who have:

• graduated from a University of Hertfordshire undergraduate degree (either studied in the UK or at a partner institution overseas) and are starting a new postgraduate taught course at the University.

Or

• graduated from a University of Hertfordshire undergraduate or postgraduate degree (either studied in the UK or at a partner institution overseas) and are starting a new research degree (PhD) course at the University.

Or

• completed the Study Abroad programme with us from a different institution.

The value of the Graduate Scholarship will be a fee deduction equivalent to 20% of the tuition fee due for the first year of full-time postgraduate study and (for UK/EU students only) 20% of the fee due for all years of part-time postgraduate or doctoral study. However in all instances, the Graduate Scholarship is not applicable to tuition fees due for repeating modules.

The Graduate Scholarship is available for a range of postgraduate taught programmes offered by the University. These include Masters awards, those at Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma level (but excluding the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), the Certificate in Professional Studies, some vocational or professional practice certificates and short courses). The graduate scholarship is not available for MSc Global Business or any postgraduate courses funded via the undergraduate student SFE loans being; MSc Nursing (Adult, Child, Learning Disabilities & Mental Health), Master of Midwifery (Shortened), School Direct (unsalaried).

If the eligibility criteria are met, this scholarship will be awarded to a University of Hertfordshire undergraduate for the first postgraduate or doctoral programme of study undertaken only. (Doctoral eligible only from 18/19 past study). If subsequent postgraduate or doctoral programmes are undertaken they will be charged at full price.

Graduates must:

a) have been offered and accepted a place on a full-time or part-time (UK/EU only) award-bearing University of Hertfordshire programme

and

b) be paying the full cost of the tuition fee from their own resources directly to the University of Hertfordshire, and not discounted or sponsored for any part of the fee by the University of Hertfordshire or an organisation such as an employer, charitable body or government department. (Any contribution by an external organisation to the student's living costs, or a contribution from the student's family to the fee or living costs, does not count as sponsorship under this scheme.)

International Students who are successfully awarded the Herts Graduate Scholarship are still eligible for the £500 tuition fee discount if they pay in full at registration.

International Students will only be able to claim either Herts Graduate Scholarship OR the International Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Candidates will be required to meet all conditions of registration before the Scholarship is awarded.

• value: £1,000 (paid in the first year of study)
• awarded every year to one student studying for the online MA Literature & Culture. Open to all first year UK and EU students, both full-time & part-time
• to apply: a panel of academic staff within the School of Humanities will select the most deserving recipient based on an application form. The application will include a question about how they will benefit from the scholarship funding.

Funding is available to help you train to teach. You can apply for a:

• tuition fee loan of up to £9,250 to cover your teacher training, so you do not need to pay course fees upfront
• maintenance loan of up to £12,382 to help with living costs.

You can still apply for a tuition fee and a maintenance loan if you already have a student loan, and regardless of whether you get a teaching bursary or scholarship.

You will only have to make loan repayments once you’re earning. Your repayments will not increase if you already have a student loan and take an additional loan for teacher training.

Bursaries and scholarships are available to trainees on tuition fee-based teacher training courses in England that lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

For 2023 to 2024, the government is offering bursaries of:

• £27,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics
• £25,000 in geography and languages (including ancient languages)
• £20,000 in biology and design and technology
• £15,000 in English
• Scholarships are offered in the following areas:
• £29,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics
• £27,000 in French, German and Spanish (no other languages)

A scholarship of £750 is available each year to a student on the doctoral or masters’ programmes in the School of Education.

To apply: eligible students will be invited by the School of Education to complete an application form in the first year of their programme.

• to apply: students will be invited to apply during semester A of their first year and the winning recipient will be chosen by an academic panel.

• awarded every year to one student studying in the School of Computer Science. Open to all first year UK postgraduate students, both full-time and part-time
• to apply: a panel of academic staff within the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science will select the most deserving recipient based on an application form. The application will include a question about how they will benefit from the scholarship funding. Marks achieved during Semester A of the first year will also be taken into consideration.

• value: at least £5,000 a year, with up to £3,000 further funding available for eligible nursing, midwifery and many allied health students*
• courses eligible are:
