Addaction is trialling the UK’s first licenced drug checking service in North Somerset as a ground-breaking way to help save lives.The pilot will run in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, a renowned leader in psychoactive substance analysis and drug detection research since 2010, with support from The Loop, which has successfully delivered drug safety testing services since 2016.

A paper recently published in New Political Economy by a team of academics led by Hulya Dagdeviren, Professor of Economic Development, University of Hertfordshire, concludes that austerity measures over the past decade, especially the cuts in welfare and local government budgets, accompanied by a range of disciplinary measures, pushed the very poor into various forms of debt by severely limiting their means of subsistence.

A consortium of the UK’s leading researchers in aerosol science, including a University of Hertfordshire research team led by Professor Darragh Murnane and Dr Victoria Hutter, was announced this week as one of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s (EPSRC) new national Centres for Doctoral Training. Professor Darragh Murnane has been named as Deputy Director of the new Centre for EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science.
