The National Academy of Sciences’ Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting covers all aspects of transport research. In total there are more than 5,000 presentations in nearly 750 sessions and workshops addressing topics of interest to all attendees - policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions.
Dr Luke Kelleher and Professor Austin Smyth presented a paper, entitled, ‘School Choice and Travel Patterns in Northern Ireland: Economic, Social and Environmental Impacts of a Complex System’ at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. (January 2015). The Northern Ireland Government is currently implementing policy reforms to its education system. This paper addressed for the first time the implications of the existing school system and a range of potential policy alternatives for travel behaviour and sustainability. The findings of the research have also been presented to the Northern Ireland Devolved Government.
Following the conference the authors were invited to submit the paper for publication in the Transportation Research Record. The Transportation Research Record – Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRR) has long been recognised internationally as one of the pre-eminent peer reviewed publications for transportation research.
A second paper entitled “Cultural Attitudes, Parental Aspirations and Socio Economic Influence on Post Primary School Selection in Northern Ireland” which complements the findings of the TRR article is due for publication in the Journal of School Choice in summer 2016.
