Entertainment

Social life at the University is vibrant and diverse both on and off campus.

Clubs, bars and restaurants abound in Hatfield and nearby St Albans, and the Galleria shopping centre right next to our campus offers a multiscreen cinema, a discount shopping outlet, and a range of restaurants and cafes.

Of course, central London is just a 25 minute train journey away, so there really is no excuse to spend every night studying - as if you would!

Our campuses are home to a wide variety of social spaces - bars, clubs, restaurants and cafes in which to meet friends, relax and unwind, or enjoy some of the best entertainments around.

Our Students' Union work hard to provide a great programme of events and offer a fantastic array of entertainment. Whether you like clubbing, live music, comedy, or just a quiet night out with your mates there's always something going on at the Forum to help you chill out after a hard day in the LRC.

Our social spaces include:

  • The Forum Hertfordshire - an entertainment venue that incorporates a nightclub and 3 bars - dance the night away, catch a band or DJ set, or just grab a bite to eat.
  • The EleHouse - a relaxed student pub offering good value bar snacks and drinks, pool tables etc. Drop in for a quiet drink after lectures or meet friends for lunch.
  • Club de Havilland - based on our de Havilland campus, this club offers good food, drinks and entertainment, and it's large hall is used for everything from Salsa lessons to gala dinners.
  • Cafes and restaurants - our campuses are home to more than a dozen cafes and eateries offering you plenty of choice if you don't fancy cooking.

The University's own arts association, UHArts, also runs a programme of comedy, dance, literature, music, theatre, and the visual arts – keep an eye out for flyers on campus.

Our resident orchestra, the Philharmonic at UH, may be an outlet for your own musical talents, or you may just choose to enjoy one of their performances.

And if it's theatre you're after, you might like to experience one of the stage productions at The Weston Auditorium, the University's own 460-seat theatre on the de Havilland Campus.

Going further afield

Bars: St Albans – just ten minutes on the University's bus service Uno – has a great selection of bars and pubs. Try The Cross Keys or the Beehive for starters.

Cinemas: catch all the latest films at the 10-screen multiplex cinema at the nearby Galleria. Campus West in Welwyn Garden City, just a 5km bus ride away, shows classics and foreign films.

Eating out: if you're looking for something quick and easy, the Galleria shopping centre, just 10 minutes' walk away, has burgers and pizzas galore, as well as oriental food and cocktails. In St Albans you can find anything from Japanese noodles at Wagamama to authentic Italian pizza at Zizzi's.

Theatre: the nearby towns of Hertford and Stevenage both have their own theatres, and for quality without West End prices, there are modern plays, classics and adaptations at the Palace Theatre in Watford. If you fancy saving up for the real thing, London's West End theatres are within easy reach.

Clubs: in addition to numerous club nights held on campus at the Forum Hertfordshire, the Students' Union also runs a bus service to the club at Batchwood Hall in St Albans. You can also take your pick of three clubs at the Stevenage leisure park, just 20 min drive away from campus.

Live music: there's a vibrant live music scene in Hertfordshire, with indie and rock at The Horn in St Albans, rock, metal and punk at the Hertford Marquee and live music at The Green Room in Welwyn – and loads more, all within a bus or train ride of the campus.
