Academic English and Study Skills Development

The UK education system may be different from the one you are familiar with. Our experience has been that international students may face challenges with some aspects of their studies.

These may include:

  • writing assignments using appropriate academic English, not spoken language which is too informal
  • knowing how to search for academic texts without going straight to Google
  • knowing how to reference texts appropriately in your assignments
  • knowing how to present to an audience
  • taking part in seminar discussions with confidence

Our workshops can help you overcome these challenges, improve your Academic English and Study Skills and make you more confident in your classes and when studying.

The workshops we now offer are in the form of recordings on various topics such as using appropriate academic style, organising your writing, referencing, reading critically, taking part in seminars, giving presentations, writing a literature review and writing a dissertation. As students, you are encouraged to access these recordings before then booking onto our synchronous sessions to further clarify the content of the recorded workshops and to ask questions.

We also offer online drop-in sessions where you can access help with a particular assignment.

Information on the workshops, online sessions and drop-ins can be found on the Academic English Study Skills Development pages

We are the Centre for Academic English (CAE) in the School of Humanities. All our staff have considerable experience in working with overseas students and are experts in the field of language teaching and associated study skills.

CAE can be found in Room B152, Main Building, College Lane campus, Hatfield. Please email if you have any queries.
