An Introduction to Adobe Photoshop
About the course
Due to the latest government coronavirus guidelines, we have reviewed and updated our short course provision. All courses are subject to change and if you have any questions, please contact the short course office for further information.
This course is aimed at graphic designers, artists and anyone who wants to work with digital images. It is also appropriate for enthusiastic amateur photographers and those who would like to start a career in photography.
The course will introduce you to the extremely powerful and versatile application Photoshop, which is part of the Adobe Design Suite of applications aimed at professional creatives and is acknowledged as the standard in the creative industries. Photoshop is best described as a digital darkroom and can handle all of the processes that a chemical darkroom would, and more. Even if you have used Photoshop before, you will benefit from learning the application in a methodical way since it will enable you to explore the programme more effectively; grasping the basic principles and giving you a fuller understanding what it is capable of.
The course will help you to navigate the Photoshop application and its wide range of tools. By the end of the course, you will be able to edit and adjust images, create collages and retouch your own photographs. You will gain practical experience using these skills in class and by the final session, you will apply your knowledge to your own images.
After an initial introduction to the software, the course will cover:
- Masks, cropping and erasing images on a photograph.
- Filters and basic retouching.
- Controlling colour levels, colour cast and adding colour into an image.
- Using layers and created collaged images.
- Preparing your images for print.
- File formats.
This course is run on a Wednesday from 19.00 to 21.30 on the following dates:
- 01 February to 09 March 2022

Please note that materials are not included within the fees for this course.
Once you have booked a course you will be sent a materials list, with instructions about what to bring on your first day. Materials can be purchased from our School shop, or online. Where necessary or relevant, some specialist materials can be purchased from the staff during workshops.
Bookings for all Creative Arts Short Courses will be reviewed 2 weeks before the start date of each course. This will allow the Short Course team to determine whether a course has met the minimum number of students needed for the class to run. If a class has failed to recruit, the class will be re-scheduled and you will be informed. Where relevant you will be offered an alternative class. If the course has met minimum numbers, bookings will stay open to the course start date or until it has met maximum numbers.
We encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment.
Bookings for all short courses need to be made online through the Universities’ online booking system, before a course commences. You cannot enrol or attend a class on the day the course starts, without prior arrangement.
