Jewellery - Working with Silver
About the course
This course is ideal for those who want to get started with making jewellery from silver, either as a hobby, or for artists/maker-designers who want to develop their jewellery skills further and who work in a craft-based creative industry.
Through weekly hands-on tutorials and demonstrations you will be learning the basic techniques and stages of making metal jewellery, initially working with copper and then moving on to silver.
What will I study?
Learner hours: 17.5
This 7 week short course will cover an introduction to:
- The basic skills required for all silver work including annealing, soldering, piercing and forming.
- Creating designs from your own ideas and planning how to make them.
- Working with copper and silver to produce at least 2 finished pieces – you can choose from a ring, bangle, pendant, cufflinks or earrings.
- Polishing and finishing techniques.
For those who have attended a course previously and want to learn further techniques or refresh existing skills, you will create more difficult pieces. For instance, you will be able to make a chain pendant or texture more complex pieces of jewellery.
By the end of the course, you will have a good understanding of the process and techniques involved in jewellery making, from start to finish, and you will be able to produce your own finished pieces of jewellery. You will also be offered support and advice if you would like to continue making and selling jewellery or want to set up your own studio.
