An Introduction to Film Editing with Adobe Premiere Pro - Online course
About the course
This six-week course is a beginners’ guide for people who want to be able to edit their own films and videos. It is also a grounding for people who want to make a start on a professional career in filmmaking and video editing.
You will learn the essentials of video editing and how to navigate the many tools offered by industry-standard editing software, Adobe Premiere Pro. In the class you will work through from the very start of basic editing projects all the way through to final delivery for various platforms.
You will be taught essential skills such as:
- Understanding file formats and different video codecs
- Media management and ingesting footage
- Video editing tools and techniques
- Understanding the art of editing
- Adding effects and transitions
- Colour grading
- Sound mastering
- Adding credits
- Key-framing and timelines
By the end of the course, you will understand how to edit video, audio and other media content and add effects and transitions to your film. Finally, you will learn how to export your finished video to a web, TV or mobile format, knowing the difference between the formats and how to choose the right one for the job.
Throughout the course you will get hands-on experience in using the skills you learn and you will be able to apply this knowledge to your own video by the final session. This course is ideal for those who want to learn through online practical workshops, with industry tips and one-to-one tutor support.
This course runs on a Thursday from 19.00 to 21.30 on the following dates:
- 04 November to 09 December 2021
- 03 February to 10 March 2022

All our online courses are taught remotely using Zoom. The tutor will be delivering the class live and importantly providing feedback and answer any questions you may have during the lesson. You will need a pc or mac laptop. It is advisable that your work area is close enough to your pc/mac to enable you to gain the most out of the course. You will be given full instructions after you enrol on how to log on to the course.
Bookings for all Creative Arts Short Courses will be reviewed 2 weeks before the start date of each course. This will allow the Short Course team to determine whether a course has met the minimum number of students needed for the class to run. If a class has failed to recruit, the class will be re-scheduled and applicants will be informed and where relevant offered an alternative class.
We, therefore, encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment.
Bookings for all short courses are to be made online through the universities online booking system before a course commences. Students are therefore not permitted to enrol or attend a class on the day the course starts without prior arrangement.
