Fashion - Professional Sewing Techniques

About the course

Being able to make your own clothes is both empowering and inspiring. These two courses offer to teach you a practical set of skills which will enable you to become confidence when working with professional machines and develop a range of related sewing skills.

Each week you will create a file of samples to show the different techniques you are mastering, as you expand your skill set, explore new areas, and experiment with new techniques in sewing and making your own clothes, giving you the independence you need.

What will I study?

Learner hours: 25

These courses consist of two 12 week complementary courses, running one after the other (you can start the courses in any order). If you take both of them you will learn all the sewing skills needed to design, create and make your own clothes.

With each course focusing on either lower or upper body sewing techniques, you can choose whichever best fits your aspirations for creating new garments and styles.

Fashion - Professional Sewing Techniques: Lower Body

Week by week, our professional tutor will take you through topics such as:

  • Induction to using industrial machines
  • Seam types
  • Hem and Edge finishing
  • Zips
  • Fly fastenings
  • Pockets
  • Waistband and waist facings
  • Sewing darts

Toward the end of the course you will make a skirt which will demonstrate the new skills you have learned.

Fashion - Professional Sewing Techniques: Upper Body

This course will build on the basic machine sewing skills learnt in part one. Each week, you will add to a file of samples to create a portfolio of visual work which will showcase your skills.

Week by week, our professional tutor will take you through topics such as:

  • Introduction to using industrial machines.
  • Collar and facing applications.
  • Various cuff finishes.
  • Various placket finishes.
  • Set-in sleeve insertion.
  • Trimming works and pressing.
  • Top stitching.

Both parts of this course are suitable for those who aspire to make clothes and want to gain a complete understanding of sewing techniques. We recommended attending both courses. However, you can attend the courses in either order.

If you combine this two-part course with the two 12 week pattern cutting courses, you will have all the skills you need to design, cut and make your own original clothing.

This course runs on a Wednesday evening from 19.00 to 21.30 on the following months:

  • Professional Sewing Techniques (Lower body): 26 September - 12 December 2023
  • Professional Sewing Techniques (Upper body): 23 January - 23 April 2024, exc 02 & 09 April, Easter break

If the course has met minimum numbers, bookings will stay open to the course start date or until it has met maximum numbers.

We encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment.

Bookings for all short courses need to be made online through our online booking system, before a course commences. You cannot enroll or attend a class on the day the course starts, without prior arrangement.
