It covers various methods available to improve the environmental performance of organisations such as the development of environmental management programmes, the management of documents and records, the importance of effective communication, the roles of internal and external audits to monitor the delivery of the environmental objectives and the steps required to achieve certification to standards such as ISO 14001. The development and application of environmental performance indicators and the various methods of environmental reporting are also covered. ◦Day 1: provides an overview of what an EMS should achieve, then examines in detail the key stages involved in implementing a system, including the process of certification to ISO 14001. The work of the International Standards Organisation will be outlined in relation to environmental standards. The contribution of EMS towards furthering sustainability within a company will be critically discussed. ◦Day 2: looks in more depth at how environmental performance can be evaluated, including initiatives such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment. The approaches to performance evaluation within ISO 14001, EMAS and BS8555 will be discussed and approaches to environmental reporting will be introduced.
