Ceramics
About the course
This course is ideal for people who would like to learn the full range of ceramic techniques, beginning with the design and conception of a piece of ceramic work, to the nuts and bolts of how to make it.
The course will cover the different techniques available to you and explore why you would choose one method over another to achieve the desired result.
What will I study?
Learner hours: 15 or 21
You will also learn about the pottery workshop, what equipment you need and how to use it, essential health and safety and how to set up your own facilities in a shed, garage, workshop or spare room.
Each week you will learn about types of clay and a different process of making, such as:
- Coiling and extruding: building shapes from hand-rolled ‘snakes’ of clay
- Slab-building: building shapes from rolled out ‘slabs’ of clay
- Pinching: using hands to shape clay
- Throwing: using a pottery wheel to ‘raise’ a shape
- Styles of surface decoration: from slips, underglazes to texture and glaze application techniques
Your work will be fired and so you will learn about the firing process. You will be supported by our staff team in creating your own finished pieces, using the any of the above techniques. Our highly experienced tutors will also ensure that you know how to work safely in a workshop environment.
By the end of the course you will have made a range of ceramic pieces of your own design and will have enough knowledge of how to make pottery independently if you wish to continue beyond the basic techniques.

Booking deadlines
Bookings for all Creative Arts Short Courses will be reviewed two weeks before the start date of each course. This will allow the Short Course team to determine whether a course has met the minimum number of students needed for the class to run. If a class has failed to recruit, the class will be re-scheduled and you will be informed. Where relevant you will be offered an alternative class. If the course has met minimum numbers, bookings will stay open to the course start date or until it has met maximum numbers.
We encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment.
Bookings for all short courses need to be made online through our online booking system, before a course commences. You cannot enroll or attend a class on the day the course starts, without prior arrangement.
