This 6 week short course is intended to give you an overview of the basic principles, features and essential tools of the software programme Adobe InDesign.

InDesign is a layout and desktop publishing program which is compatible with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and forms part of the Adobe Design Suite. It’s an important aspect of any designer’s set of digital tools.

It’s an important aspect of any designer’s set of digital tools.

What will I study?

InDesign is ideal for people who want to create their own graphic design work, including posters, publications, leaflets, flyers, business cards and other forms of publicity. Used alongside Illustrator and Photoshop, it is a powerful software package, allowing you to create design layouts which are ready for print or web, to professional standards. Our course will enable you to get the most out of this software.

Course summary

After an initial introduction to the software, the course will cover:

  • The principles of design and layout
  • Setting up your page
  • Using layouts and grids
  • Inserting and distributing images
  • Understanding and using text, font, spacing and sizes
  • Creating basic posters, letters and leaflets
  • Preparing your documents for printing and creating .pdf files and other file formats

By the end of the six sessions, you will be able to use your design ability to lay out a range of documents. The course is run by an expert tutor who will offer you advice, insight and practical experience, combined with up-to-the-minute software skills to enable you to create your own designs and artwork to a professional standard, ready for print and publishing.

Professional guidance is essential to get the most out of this complex programme, allowing you to harness the power and potential of Illustrator.

Where will I study?

Mode of delivery: Online

All our online courses are taught remotely using Zoom. The tutor will be delivering the class live and importantly providing feedback and answer any questions you may have during the lesson. You will need a pc or mac laptop. You will be given full instructions after you enrol on how to log on to Zoom so you can attend the course.

Materials

For this course you will need to purchase the trial version of Adobe After Effects and we commend doing this no earlier than three days before the course starts, for your home PC or Mac.

Prerequisites

To be able to maintain the pace of this course you should:

  • Have PC skills that are above a basic level
  • Have some experience using programs such as Word or Photoshop.
  • Be expected to navigate files and folders on a computer and understand how to use Googles Search Engine

Booking deadlines

Bookings for all Creative Arts Short Courses will be reviewed two weeks before the start date of each course. This will allow the Short Course team to determine whether a course has met the minimum number of students needed for the class to run. If a class has failed to recruit, the class will be re-scheduled and you will be informed. Where relevant you will be offered an alternative class. If the course has met minimum numbers, bookings will stay open to the course start date or until it has met maximum numbers.

We encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment.

Bookings for all short courses need to be made online through our online booking system, before a course commences. You cannot enroll or attend a class on the day the course starts, without prior arrangement.

Cancellations

If for any reason you change your mind about joining us after you have accepted the offer, you have a legal right to cancel your contract to study with us within 14 days. This cancellation period therefore ends at the end of 14 days after the day on which you accepted our offer. Find further details of our cancellation terms here.
