13~17 year olds - Character Prop Making and Special Effects Summer Camp

About the course

Have you ever wondered how your favourite film or game character is created in the studio setting? Do you want to make your own character come to life?

This course will teach you all the tricks to creatively use easy-access technology – telematics and Ableton – to create a virtual reality film and sound effects to envision your own fantasy in real life.

What will I study?

Learner hours: 25

DayLessonWorkshop
Day 1Drawing ideasWe will learn about how other artists use digital technology, such as telematics, sound engineering and animation, to envision their fantasies. With ideas and concepts generated for their fictional tales through drawings, visual research and creative writing, students will create a simple script for their film production.
Day 2Making propsWe will use found materials and art materials available to create sculptures and objects that could be featured and used in their film.
Day 3Designing the setWe will transform the classroom into a studio film set. Students will learn how to set up a green screen studio for their virtual-real fantasy. Students will learn and test ways to use green screen and chromakey techniques to create and play in the “film set” to rehearse and test-run their film production.
Day 4 DIY film and performanceStudents will direct with their film crew supporting them. Each student will have the rest of the class as their film crew to create a short film production. The course will end with a screening of their film production to the other students.
Day 5DIY film and performanceStudents will direct with their film crew supporting them. Each student will have the rest of the class as their film crew to create a short film production. The course will end with a screening of their film production to the other students.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the workshop, you will have learnt the step-by-step guide to film production. You will leave the course with your own film, the methods and knowledge about set design and prop making, ways to realize virtual-real fantasies in real-life scenarios, knowledge about basic sound design, and necessary skills for film production in the studio setting.

Booking deadlines

Bookings for all Creative Arts Short Courses will be reviewed two weeks before the start date of each course. This will allow the Short Course team to determine whether a course has met the minimum number of students needed for the class to run. If a class has failed to recruit, the class will be re-scheduled and you will be informed. Where relevant you will be offered an alternative class. If the course has met minimum numbers, bookings will stay open to the course start date or until it has met maximum numbers.

We encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment.

Bookings for all short courses need to be made online through our online booking system, before a course commences. You cannot enroll or attend a class on the day the course starts.
