Learning outcomes

 Knowledge and Understanding: 

1. Critically appraise how the PMA role will be promoted within a maternity service to support midwifery practice within the context of local governance policies and procedures. 

2. Evaluate how the principles of quality improvement are applied to midwifery practice to develop individuals and services. 

3. Examine how visible leadership in the workplace may benefit an organisation and foster the development of a learning culture.  


Skills and Attributes: 

1. Interpret and apply the principles of facilitative Restorative Clinical Supervision, using effective communication strategies and making referrals for arbitration, advocacy and mediation. 

2. Utilising innovation and creativity, analyse the role of the PMA in the context of leading the profession and at strategic, operational and local levels. 

3. Critically evaluate national clinical governance issues and their contribution to local governance and act as a resource for midwives and service users to implement and support change.

Entry Requirements

The module forms part of a broader CPD famework which can lead to the award of MSc degree in Midwifery & Women's Health.

Applicants should be experienced midwives with a minimum of 2 years' experience and working in an appropriate environment.  

 

Course Overview

This module is credited at level 7 and is intended for experienced midwives to develop knowledge and skills to lead midwifery practice effectively within an employer-led system of midwifery supervision in the United Kingdom. The professional aspects of leadership and practice will be contextualised within the wider health agenda. This module meets the requirements of the A-EQUIP a model of clinical midwifery supervision as set out by NHS England and will prepare midwives who intend to seek appointment as a Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)   

Course content

Examples of module content include:

  • The history and development of an employer-led model of midwifery supervision
  • Midwifery legislation
  • Drivers for change and current policy on maternity services
  • Personal action for quality improvement, in the framework of clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit
  • Clinical and peer supervision for midwives
  • Restorative clinical supervision
  • Professional education and development
  • Professional leadership

There are two summative assessments, both need to be passed
