Why choose this course?

3D Printing is a technology that has recently come within reach of the domestic consumer and hobbyist as well as being at the cutting edge in the creative, science, engineering and manufacturing industries.

This course is for people who want to explore what 3D printing is and the potential it has to change the future of design and manufacturing. It will enable you to understand how 3D printing works, its benefits and limitations and the kind of objects that you can print.

Over the three weeks you will learn about:

  • Types of 3D printer
  • Types of filament and print materials
  • Downloading printable files from open source websites
  • How a file is prepared for printing

This course is a basic introduction to the potential of 3D printing. For those who want to follow up this introductory course, we also offer an advanced 3D printing course which enables students to design and print more complex designs and take their existing knowledge to a professional level.

Booking deadlines

Bookings for all Creative Arts Short Courses will be reviewed 2 weeks before the start date of each course.  This will allow the Short Course team to determine whether a course has met the minimum number of students needed for the class to run. If a class has failed to recruit, the class will be re-scheduled and applicants will be informed and where relevant offered an alternative class.

We therefore encourage you to book early before the deadline to avoid disappointment.

Bookings for all short courses are to be made online through the universities online booking system before a course commences. Students are therefore not permitted to enrol or attend a class on the day the course starts without prior arrangement.

Cancellations

Entry requirements...

This course is for people with little or no experience who want to learn about what 3D printing is and explore its potential. The course can also be a stepping stone to an intermediate level course.

To be able to maintain the pace of this course you should:

  • Ideally have attended our short course on Introduction to CAD or have knowledge on Computer Aided Design software
  • Have computer skills that are above a basic level 
  • Have some experience using programs such as Illustrator or Photoshop
  • Be expected to navigate files and folders on a computer
