The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) is the leading professional body for marketers worldwide and exists to develop the marketing profession, maintain professional standards and improve the skills of marketing practitioners.

CIM qualifications are highly sought after by employers. The aim of the CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing is to provide the practising marketer with relevant, contemporary marketing content to equip them for the current global landscape. Learning is brought to life through meaningful and active assessment methods which embrace the modern marketing industry.

The course consists of 3 units taught at a series of evening classes.

Module 1:  Marketing  (Mandatory) Starts 26 September 2018

Marketing is a key driver of success in today’s dynamic organisations. This module will give you an insight into marketing concepts and tools and how these are applied to deliver results.

Unit 1   The Marketing Concept

  1. Understand the role and function of marketing
  2. Understand what influences customer behaviour

Unit 2   Analysis and Insight

  1. Identify factors and trends in the marketing environment and how they affect marketing planning
  2. Identify options for gathering relevant marketing information

Unit 3  Marketing Mix

  1. Know the elements of the marketing mix
  2. Apply and adapt the marketing mix to satisfy customer needs

Module assessment is by exam

Module 2:  Integrated Communications  (Mandatory)  Starts 9 January 2019

Marketers need to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and customers. This module will provide you with the skills to assist in developing communications to build sustainable relationships.

Unit 1    Internal marketing

  1. Know how to build cross-functional relationships
  2. Understand how to harness resources to deliver effective marketing solutions

Unit 2    Value proposition

  1.   Create effective communications to deliver value to customers
  2.   Understand product and brand management

Unit 3    Marketing communications

  1. Understand the components of the marketing communications mix
  2. Develop integrated marketing communications

Module assessment is by written assignment

Module 3: Digital Marketing  Starts 10 April 2019

Digital marketing is constantly evolving, and is an increasingly important discipline within modern marketing. This module will enable you to build essential skills in order to identify, integrate and monitor effective digital tactics to deliver enhanced marketing activities.

Unit 1    Digital landscape

  1. Understand the range of different contexts across which marketers operate Understand the opportunities and challenges presented through the disruptive digital environment.
  2. Assess the impact and influence of the dynamic digital environment.

Unit 2    Digital toolkit

  1. Know how key digital tools can support and enhance marketing.
  2. Understand the relevance of digital platforms and channels in context.

Unit 3    Digital in action

  1. Develop digital activities to support and enhance multichannel marketing.
  2. Apply the key principles involved in monitoring and measuring digital marketing effectiveness.

Module assessment is by written assignment

Is this the course for you?

Are you an aspiring professional marketer who wishes to gain knowledge and skills to succeed and progress within a career in marketing?
Typical profiles of people who might take this qualification could include: Marketing assistants or co-ordinators with approximately one year in a marketing role.   

This qualification is the equivalent to the first year of a foundation degree, which means you will need to meet at least one of these criteria:

  • Have a minimum of two A Levels
  • Hold any general UK degree or International equivalent
  • Hold a CIM Introductory Certificate in Marketing (Level 3)
  • Have an NVQ or SVQ Level 3 (equivalent to NGF Level 3)
  • Have an NVQ or SVQ Level 4 in any other subject (UK – equivalent to NGF Level 4 and above)

Hold an international baccalaureate (equivalent to NQF Level 3 and above) or a pass of the entry test onto Level 4

The course normally takes approximately nine months to complete, starting in September. However, you may join at Unit 2 if you have the relevant experience. You can set your own pace of study to tailor the course around your other commitments.

University of Hertfordshire alumni, staff and students receive a 20% discount.

Please note: These costs include course materials for each module. 
CIM membership and examination fees are additional and payable directly to The Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Teaching methods

The course is taught via a series of weekly evening classes, supported by distance learning.  The course is currently taught on Wednesdays between 19.00-21.30.
