Overview of radiotherapy and the professional role

Cancer is indiscriminate, affecting people from every part of the world, yet radiotherapy can be used to treat symptoms of and cure patients with a range of different cancers. Using specialist equipment, radiotherapy is calculated for each individual patient and is delivered precisely by highly skilled therapeutic radiographers. You must be registered with the HCPC in order to practise as a therapeutic radiographer in the UK and it is only therapeutic radiographers who are able to administer radiotherapy treatments, which we deliver using a person-centred, safety-conscious, holistic approach.

Staff expertise

Our radiotherapy team is comprised of full and part-time qualified therapeutic radiographers and other healthcare professionals. We not only have a broad range of expertise in the multifaceted aspects of radiotherapy practice and oncology management, but also are highly regarded for our teaching skills. We have strong links with our placement partners who contribute to the programmes as well as close association with the wider professional community. Former radiotherapy patients are also an important part of the radiotherapy teaching team.

We pride ourselves on the levels of academic, clinical, and pastoral support our students receive, made possible by having a team who are accessible, supportive, and welcoming.

Facilities

Students on our radiotherapy courses use our impressive facilities including the CT scanner, virtual radiotherapy treatment simulation centre (VERT) and treatment planning systems to support authentic learning.

Clinical placements

In every year of the programme, students undertake placements in radiotherapy departments, as we believe that the best way to develop radiotherapy clinical skills and knowledge is by hands-on experience, gained by working in our partner clinical placement hospitals. There is also an opportunity to undertake an elective placement in a department of your choosing.

We have a dedicated team that manages and supports clinical placements. The team includes University lecturers and placement educators who work together and meet regularly to ensure that your clinical practice experience is of the highest quality.
