Careers service

The University of Hertfordshire Careers and Employment service works hard to support all the students of the School of Creative Arts with career planning and professional skills building throughout their time on their course.

Students (and also graduates for two years after they have finished their course) have access to all of the services that Careers and Employment (CE) provide; including face to face appointments to discuss any aspect of their career planning, career workshops and webinars, and a wide range of online resources on Handshake, a bespoke career planning portal exclusively for University of Hertfordshire students.

Collaborative working to source exclusive, bespoke opportunities

Creative industry employers advertise a wide range of freelance and often exclusive work, as well as placements, internships and graduate jobs for students and graduates via Handshake to suit ambitious, artistic students from across all of the School’s disciplines.

Our CE service works with the School’s teaching staff to best support students with applications for both short term opportunities and also longer term sandwich placements which help to ensure that each student feels ready to enter the industry when they complete their course.

As well as this, the CE service and School’s teaching staff also work together to offer bespoke sessions across all programmes by sourcing and bringing in industry influencers to work with our specialist creative arts careers advisers to ensure all students have the skills they need to progress their chosen careers.

Learn to develop a freelance practice as well as how to secure a job in the industry

Our Enterprise Advisers also work with students and graduates looking to develop their own freelance practice, and link them to the many exclusive enterprise initiatives that students can get involved in, from competitions to raise funds to grow a business, to enterprise boot camps designed to finely tune entrepreneurial skills.

The team also organise and run events called Creative Edge, which are one day events focussed on increasing the employability skills for Creative Arts students, with high profile guest speakers, targeted workshops, alumni panels and a job fair.

Through bespoke sessions, experiences and opportunities, the service helps graduating students to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and experience to impress future employers, and the confidence to begin a successful and rewarding career.
