Nick Buttenshaw

Meet Nick Buttenshaw who has applied his technical knowledge in his career. Nick is currently a Sales Engineer for Hamamatsu Photonics, the world leader in photonics.

University life and experience

Nick has always had an interest in science, so it was unsurprising that he was eager to study the subject at the University of Hertfordshire. Although he knew that the University had a smaller Physics & Astronomy compared to other leading universities, Nick was determined to study with us due to our expertise, support available and facilities, including Bayfordbury Observatory. As an active person he was also impressed by our sporting facilities.

He says that his studies enabled him to achieve a higher understanding and concrete educational foundation in Astrophysics. Nick believes that this was done to having access to world-leading researchers and lecturers. He says, … This also extended to outside of lectures, where they were always open and available, but most importantly, willing to help and support you in your studies and personal development.’ This enabled him to move to a scientific-based job role and excel in a field he is passionate about.

Outside of his studies, Nick was heavily involved in student-life, including the UH Climbing Climb and Christian Union. Nick says that it was through these extra-curricular activities that he made his fondest memories: ‘The Climbing Club was a fantastic social and sporting group and always provided lots of laughs. My closest, lifelong friendships where formed through being part of the Christian Union and a local church. For me, these experiences are what made university so special.’

Future aspirations

Nick currently works for Hamamatsu Photonics., the world leader in photonics. Despite not knowing about the company before he applied for the job, he has come to realise the important role photonics play in our everyday lives. In the future, he hope to continue working for Hamamatsu and to continue as an ‘integral and successful part of the family here.’ He says, ‘Knowing that I have done my small part for something good, something worthwhile, something life-changing...is what makes me happy.’
