The UK’s First Degree-Level Apprenticeship in the Travel Sector opens for applications
The University of Hertfordshire is working with TUI, the world’s leading travel company, to launch the ‘TUI Management Degree Apprenticeship’, the first Degree-level apprenticeship in the travel industry.
The Degree in Business and Management is bespoke and designed by TUI and the University to reflect the modern needs of a global travel business. Learning modules include global perspectives in business, the principles of marketing, and the commercial environment as well as management and leadership modules. The students will work full-time for TUI in a variety of roles on a rotation basis including in its airline ‘TUI Airways’, Business Change and Commercial functions enabling young people to ‘earn while they learn’ and complete their Degree over four years.
'flexible, industry-focused courses'
Julie Newlan, the University of Hertfordshire’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Business and International Development) said, 'As a leading business facing University, the University of Hertfordshire is particularly proud of our strong business partnerships and our 60-year history of offering flexible, industry-focused courses to our business partners. In 1941 we first started partnering with industry to train 15 and 16 year old aircraft apprentices for the de Havilland Aircraft Company and our degree apprenticeship with TUI is a perfect example of how we still work collaboratively to create courses that are shaped by the needs of modern business.
'We want all of our students to leave us with the perfect skills for the workplace and working with industry leaders such as TUI is one way we ensure that the training we develop delivers those skills.'
'the best on the job training in the industry'
Nick Longman, Managing Director of TUI UK and Ireland said, 'The Degree will enable young people to kick start their career at 18. It will give them a huge advantage over their peers to get a quality Degree-level education and qualification with the University of Hertfordshire, whilst receiving the best on-the-job training in the industry. At the end of the four years, they will have experienced every aspect of the business, received mentoring by our senior managers and completed a Degree - truly bringing together the theory and the practice.
'We hope to find our next future business leaders from the course. Studying and working at the same time will be hard work, so we’re looking for people with a real determination and drive to succeed. Those who are committed to securing a career that will quite literally take them places.'
Enjoy the benefits of being a student
The students will study with the University of Hertfordshire and receive 25-days on campus learning days to help complete assignments and projects. Enjoying all of the benefits of being a student including access to all social and sports facilities and the library and learning resources, the students will be part of one of the UK’s leading Universities.
TUI has a strong heritage of recruiting apprentices. Since the year 2000, more than 5,500 apprenticeships have been offered by TUI in the UK.
This new opportunity is available to anybody who meets the qualifying criteria and although it’s thought most people applying will be those finishing their A-Levels, TUI is also hoping to receive applications from people of any age and background who may want a change of career or who didn’t study for a Degree and would like to ‘back-fill’ their education whilst continuing to work.
Caroline Kitcher, HR Director at TUI UK and Ireland said: 'The benefits of having people from different backgrounds in the workplace are second to none. From a fresh pair of eyes on a problem, to a different perspective on a project, the learning experience is absolutely two-way. We’re hoping to learn as much from our Management Degree apprentices as they learn from us. I’m thrilled to be launching our new Degree-level apprenticeship as we look to recruit and train the future of our business.'
Applications are open from 4 December 2017 and close on 31January 2018. Prospective students can apply and find more information on the TUI website.
