British values within the University

At the University of Hertfordshire, we want to ensure that our students become valuable and responsible members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background.

Embedded throughout the University is the celebration and understanding of British values. The basic values include:

• democracy
• the rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect and tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs.

Students at the University should always feel that their voice can be heard during their time with us. We actively encourage our students to become involved and we offer opportunities such as becoming a student representative or an elected officer at the Students' Union. Our student representatives and elected officers are chosen through a campus ballot that students take part in every year.  All of our students are invited to participate in our regular feedback campaigns throughout the academic year.

Students and staff are regularly encouraged to take part in political debates, notably, during the General Election and EU Referendum, the University hosted a series of on campus events surrounding these landmark political moments.

Our Academic Schools of Study, Students' Union, Herts Squad and student-led societies regularly host events held on and off campus providing opportunities to engage in co and extra-curricular activities. These events are open to all members of the University community and regularly promote a variety of topics including sharing different interests, lifestyles, faiths and cultural traditions with the wider student population.

Across all of our activities, we embed not only our University values ‘FACES’ but also a celebration of our British values.
