The University is an open-campus business incubator, giving start-ups and small enterprises access to hundreds of academic experts and their research as well as seminars, mentors, networking events and flexible workspaces. Working in this unique environment helps foster creativity organically and provides new opportunities for growth and innovation.

In 2019, the University of Hertfordshire was awarded £1.1m to set up a new University Enterprise Zone to support start-up and small businesses and to increase economic growth, employment, and investment in the county. The Enterprise Zone offers companies across the county access to new specialist workspaces, equipment and resources and encourage the development of talent through apprenticeships and student placements. A network of academics, supported by our world-leading research, will enable businesses to grow and prosper. The funding forms part of the government’s £20 million investment allocated to 20 universities to develop new University Enterprise Zones (UEZs) across the country to provide vital specialist support to small businesses in pioneering industries.

The Hertfordshire Growth Hub is the county’s free and impartial business support service led by Exemplas together with the University of Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce. Since its launch in 2014, it has provided expert advice to over 1,700 local small and medium-sized enterprises to help accelerate their growth. Specialist advisers work closely with businesses, taking an objective look at where they and where they want to be, before identifying exactly what they need to do to support growth.

The University of Hertfordshire’s new Enterprise Hub, due to open in 2020, will tangibly link education, entrepreneurship, apprenticeships and social facilities at the de Haviland campus. Part-funded by the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the £12m project will deliver dedicated Business Incubation facilities designed to support start-ups and graduate entrepreneurs, adaptable teaching and exam space for Degree Apprenticeship, MBA, undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as formal and informal social spaces that encourages communication and collaboration.
