Tony attended Hollings College and worked in Bermuda for two years before joining Stanneylands Restaurants in Cheshire in 1967.
He joined Whitbread in 1971 and moved south as a founding director of Beefeater Steakhouses in 1980. In 1983 he acquired the franchise and established TGI Friday’s in the UK before going on to become Service Quality Director for Whitbread Plc in a 22 year career with Whitbread.
After 2 years at Kingfisher Plc he joined Bass Taverns (now Mitchells & Butlers’) as the Board Director responsible for developing brands such as Toby, Crown Carvery, Vintage Inns, Innkeepers Lodges, Hol-iday Inn Express, Premium Country Dining, Village Pub & Kitchen, Miller & Carter and acquiring Harvest-er, Browns and Alex Cafe Bars in Germany.
He is widely credited with transforming Mitchells & Butlers’ into the country’s leading Pub and Restaurant branded company.
During this time he was awarded a Hotel & Caterer ‘Catey’ Pub & Restaurant industry award, voted The Retailers Retailer best individual by the Pub and Restaurant industry in both 2002 and 2006 and received a Lifetime achievement award from the European Foodservice Summit in Zurich in 2007.
After retiring in 2008, Tony has served on the boards of Rosinter, the largest restaurant company in the USSR, Hans Im Gluck in Germany and The Restaurant Group Plc. in the United Kingdom as the Senior Independent Director.
