Decarbonisation in the Herts community

Our climate change and sustainability focus, both on campus and within our wider community, is the big picture - decarbonisation.

We have reduced our carbon footprint by 43% since 2005, which is equal to the carbon generated by burning five million kilogrammes of coal; but there is more work to be done. We will be focusing on:

  • reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency
  • continuing to use green energy
  • investing in our estate
  • continuing to invest in waste management
  • improving biodiversity on our campuses
  • ensuring that sustainability runs through our entire supply chain.

We want to help everyone in our community to do things that collectively make a big difference, by doing things like changing the way we work and helping to make travel ‘greener’. We encourage participation in engaging activities and societies such as our student Green Team. Our staff are also welcome to join our Sustainability Staff Network.

Our senior leaders collaborate with the University’s environmental steering group, which sets and drives our objectives to best align our vision and action plans with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their combined leadership and passion for sustainability ensures that we share a connected approach to delivering initiatives across all our schools and Strategic Business Units (SBUs), and continue to go from strength to strength.
