Welcome to the Counselling Centre

We hope all students and staff will find their time at University enjoyable and productive. However everyone encounters periods of stress and personal difficulty at some time in life.
The Counselling Centre is here to help any members of the University who are experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties which interfere with them getting the most out of their time here. It is staffed by qualified and experienced counsellors who understand the pressures of university life.
Our Centre is:
- professional (we abide by the BACP’s Framework for Ethical Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy)
- accessible ( level access for wheelchairs, induction loop)
- open to all members of the University (regardless of ethnic background, sexual orientation, disability status) · confidential
- well informed about academic departments, other University services and local mental health provision
- free
- active in its contribution to the development of national policies on mental well being in HE
What services do we offer students?
- Individual and group counselling
- Workshops (eg exam anxiety, procrastination, international students)
- Referral to other services
- OurSpace – an on-line peer support group
- Books2Go – a lending library
- Self-help information– in the Centre and on the UH intranet - StudyNet
- Telephone and Skype counselling for students on placement

What difficulties do people bring?
Some of the most common are:- Problems with study eg poor concentration, fear of failure
- Difficulties with relationships
- Bereavement
- Self-harm
- Anxiety or depression
- Problems with eating or alcohol
- Managing transitions eg settling into university
What kind of counselling do you offer?
We use a range of models including psychodynamic focal therapy, CBT and open-ended group therapy
Where is the Counselling Centre?
Ground Floor of the MacLaurin Building (opposite DeHavilland Campus), Hatfield Business Park, AL10 9NE
You will be able to travel to the MacLaurin Building using the UH Shuttle Bus – the MacLaurin bus stop is the next stop after DeHavilland.
