Fancy getting off campus for a day out? There’s plenty to do within easy reach of the University of Hertfordshire. Here are some ideas for places to visit.
In Hertfordshire

Hatfield House , one of the finest Jacobean houses in the UK, is within easy reach of the campus. You can still visit the Great Hall, the only remaining wing of the Royal Palace of Hatfield (1485) which was home to Elizabeth I during part of her childhood. There are also gardens, nature trails, extensive woodland and a deer park.
Knebworth House, famous worldwide for its rock concerts, is around fifteen kilometres away near Stevenage. It holds special events, fairs and concerts all year round.

St Albans Cathedral is where the university’s graduation ceremonies take place, but don’t wait until then to see this beautiful, historic building.
Verulamium Park discover St Albans’ Roman history at the park, where you can see the remains of the walls of the ancient Roman city of Verulamium.
Mountfitchet castle and Norman village in Stansted is believed to have originally been an Iron Age fort, and was settled by the Romans, Saxons and Vikings. The castle itself is the only remaining wooden motte and bailey castle left anywhere in the world.

In London

Camden Lock market this fantastic collection of stalls, shops and restaurants along the picturesque canal is always worth a look. The big market day is Sunday.
Covent garden catch some of the free street performers and musicians, or simply browse the shops and boutiques and enjoy a coffee.
The British Museum home to one of the most amazing collection of Egyptian artefacts outside Egypt, as well as a wealth of other displays, the British Museum in Bloomsbury is an absolute must.

Madame Tussaud’s mingle with the rich and famous (well, their waxworks!) at Madame Tussaud’s and see the latest additions to the hall of fame. Remember that you can save up to fifty per cent by booking online, and late admissions are also discounted.
The London Eye get a bird’s eye view of the city from the world’s largest observation wheel, on the south bank next to the old County Hall.

On a budget

The Hertfordshire Way walkers will love this – a 166-mile (265 km) circular footpath which takes you through some of the most beautiful, unspoilt parts of the county.
Welwyn Garden City one of the first British new towns, Welwyn’s beautiful neo-Georgian centre is well worth exploring.
Borough market visit London’s oldest and busiest food market – you’ll pick up some free samples, if you’re lucky.
