Nightlife

Whether you want to stay on campus or explore the local area, there’s loads to do at the University of Hertfordshire.

Going Out on Campus

Chill out with a drink and some good company at the Elehouse bar in the Students’ Union, or visit our new £38m entertainment venue, The Forum, which will open September 2009 and promises to be a great place to meet, eat and have a night out with its choice of new bars, eateries and a mini-club.

Stroll down to the de Havilland Sports and Social Club for a game of pool, or check out the music and dance floor every day of the week at the Students’ Union Font bar.

The university’s own arts association, UHArts, runs a programme of comedy, dance, literature, music, theatre, and the visual arts – keep an eye out for flyers on campus.

Our resident orchestra, the Philharmonic at UH, may be an outlet for your own musical talents, or you may just choose to enjoy one of their performances.

And if it’s theatre you’re after, you might like to experience one of the stage productions at The Weston Auditorium, the university’s own four hundred and sixty-seat theatre on the de Havilland Campus.

Going Further Afield

Bars: St Albans – just ten minutes on the university’s bus service Uno – has a great selection of bars and pubs. Try The Cross keys or the Beehive for starters.

Cinemas: catch all the latest films at the ten-screen multiplex cinema at the nearby Galleria. Campus West in Welwyn Garden City, just a 5 km bus ride away, shows classics and foreign films.

Eating out: if you’re looking for something quick and easy, the Galleria shopping centre, just ten minutes’ walk away, has burgers and pizzas galore, as well as oriental food and cocktails at Mai Tai’s. In St Albans you can find anything from Japanese noodles at Wagamama to authentic Italian pizza at Zizzi’s to haute cuisine at Darcy’s.

Theatre: the nearby towns of Hertford and Stevenage both have their own theatres, and for quality without West End prices, there are modern plays, classics and adaptations at the Palace Theatre in Watford. If you fancy saving up for the real thing, London’s West End theatres are within easy reach.

Clubs: the union runs a bus service to the club at Batchwood Hall in St Albans, and you can take your pick of three clubs at the Stevenage leisure park.

Live music: there’s a vibrant live music scene in Hertfordshire, with indie and rock at The Horn in St Albans, rock, metal and punk at the Hertford Marquee and live music at The Green Room in Welwyn – and loads more, all within a bus or train ride of the campus.
