Run by the School of Creative Arts, MA Graphic Design Programme aims to provide you with an understanding of the cutting-edge of graphic design and related disciplines. It helps you develop your creative potential as a practitioner and provides you with the professional and entrepreneurial skills to work in your field.

Visual communication and the graphic image are increasingly important in the global information economy. We encourage you to adopt a creative, enquiring and critical approach to the graphic image and its uses in contemporary practice.

The course helps you acquire a wide range of advanced skills from traditional craft processes to digital image making. You will be encouraged to experiment and explore possibilities of the graphic image and its uses. The course explores graphic design in both a web-based and print formats. Particular attention is also given to professional practice and entrepreneurialism, helping you acquire the skills required to practice in the creative and cultural industries. This course will also provide you with the skills needed to work as a freelance practitioner.

Our staff are experienced in research, industry and professional practice. You will also benefit from contributions from visiting designers and design professionals, as well as from involvement with our international exhibitions programme. We also have close links with a wide range of industry partners and contributes to major national and international events in the industry.

This course would be of interest to graphic designers, information and exhibition designers, illustrators and fine artists keen to expand their portfolio of skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be able to demonstrate recent relevant education or experience in one of the fields or a related field, and have an ability to communicate effectively both in their chosen media and written and spoken English. Accreditation of professional experience may be possible for practitioners without a first degree.

A minimum IELTS score of 6.5, TOEFL 550 (213 CBT) or equivalent is required for those for whom English is not their first language.

English language requirements

All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency. The following qualifications and grades will be considered

  • GCSE English language grade A-C
  • IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in any band)

Other English language tests are accepted. Please contact the International Office for details.

Assessment

Coursework - there will be a fixed date for assignment submission.

Particular emphasis is given to providing you with the skills necessary to further your career as a graphic designer. The course is designed to help you understand and work within the contemporary industrial environment and particular attention is given to helping you acquire entrepreneurial skills.
