Lyndall Phelps’ playful intervention introduces a flutter of hand-made butterflies throughout St Albans Museum + Gallery, gently landing on unexpected surfaces across the building’s three floors.

Lyndall’s interest in absent objects within the ebb and flow of St Albans Museums’ collections’ life, led her to the remarkable Alexander Hopkins British Butterfly Collection that was gifted to Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery. In celebration of St Albans Museum + Gallery’s opening, Lyndall invites the butterflies back, giving viewers glimpses of the specimens. Purple Emperors, Swallow Tails and Clouded Yellows are reintroduced to their previous habitat; re-imagined in reflective, decorative and kaleidoscopic form.

St Albans Museum + Gallery

The new St Albans Museum + Gallery opens this spring following a transformation of the Town Hall. UH Arts is delighted to be a key partner in this pioneering project, contributing a range of exhibitions and events.

We launch the new venue 8 June 2018. The doors open to museum collection displays and temporary exhibitions, including a surprising intervention through the building by artist Lyndall Phelps, a dramatic new installation by Susie MacMurray and a showcase of work by the three artists-in-residence.
