The SELFMADE team is made up of a group of researchers from East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and the University of Hertfordshire.

The day-to-day running of the SELFMADE project is undertaken by Jon Reston and Becky Bieraugel.

  • Professor Ken Farrington

    Consultant Nephrologist - East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

    Ken Farrington

    Professor Farrington is a consultant nephrologist at Lister Hospital and also a professor and associated dean of the post-graduate medical school at the University of Hertfordshire.

    He has over 30 years of experience in renal medicine and has written text books and over 100 peer reviewed scientific journal papers.

  • Jon Reston

    Reseach Fellow - University of Hertfordshire

    Jon Reton

    Jon is currently pursuing his PhD in health psychology.

    He holds a Master’s degree in psychology and has spent 3 years working as an advisor in research methodology for the National Institute for Health Research.

  • Rebecca Bieraugel

    Clinical Research Specialist - East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

    Rebecca Bieraugel

    Rebecca recently rejoined the NHS to work on the SELFMADE project after 5 years at Roche.

    She has 10 years of experience in renal nursing, and has a long standing interest in patient self-management.

  • Professor Tricia Wilson

    Professor of Primary and Community Care - University of Kent

    Dr Tricia Wilson

    Tricia is a Professor of Primary and Community Care at the University of Kent.

    Tricia’s PhD explored self-management in chronic disease, and she has researched and written extensively on the topic of patient self-management initiatives such as the Expert Patient Programme.

  • Dr Maxine Offredy

    Reader in Public Health - University of Hertfordshire

    Dr Maxine Offredy

    Maxine is a Reader in Primary Healthcare at the University of Hertfordshire, based in the Centre for Primary and Community Care.

    She holds a PhD in Decision Making and has written extensively on the topic.

  • Dr David Wellsted

    Senior Lecturer - University of Hertfordshire

    Dr David Wellsted

    Dr Wellsted is the head of the Centre for Lifespan and Chronic Illness Research at the University of Hertfordshire.

    He holds a PhD in psychophysics, and is currently the Associate Director for the East of England’s Research Design Service.

  • Maria Da Silva-Gane

    Renal Counsellor - East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

    Maria is a renal counsellor with 20 years of experience. Based at Lister Hospital, she works with patients and carers with renal disease who want extra support.

    She has been involved in groundbreaking work on end of life care in renal patients, and has published her work and presented at high profile renal conferences.

Steering group

The SELFMADE study group is passionate about the research we do, but we also want to make sure that we get it right.

As is standard practice for this kind of research, we have a 'steering group' who provide their expertise and perspectives at biannual meetings, to oversee and make sure the project is progressing as planned.
