Advocacy

At the University we value the importance of students learning, and regularly practicing, the full range of advocacy skills which will be required for your future career in the legal profession.

Unlike most other law schools, we offer extensive opportunities to not only participate in mooting, but also mock trial advocacy activities.  As such we run an extra-curricular advocacy programme during which we teach you in a supervised forum to develop important skills such as how to conduct an examination-in-chief and cross-examination of witnesses, and all other aspects of trial advocacy. These activities take place in our new state-of-the-art replica Crown Court room which is one of the only ones of its kind in the country; all of which cements our place at the forefront of law schools in providing these valuable skills development.

We regularly have a range of guest speakers from the legal profession who come and give talks to students on how to conduct these activities as well as how to go about pursuing a career in the law.

All of our advocacy activities are kindly sponsored by 15 New Bridge Street Chambers a barristers' chambers in London.  Through this sponsorship the winners of our internal advocacy competition each year obtain work experience with the chambers.

Additionally, we are also the founders, organisers, and hosts of the UH/Blackstone’s National Criminal Advocacy Competition in conjunction with Oxford University Press and 15 New Bridge Street.
