Development of fieldable biological detection systems for use by the UK armed forces is a high priority for the UK Ministry of Defence. PIBBDT - The Portable Integrated Battlespace Biological Detection Technology was a technical demonstrator programme funded by the MOD for the development of a next generation biological detection system.

The contract was awarded in 2008 to the consortium led by Bristol Industrial & Research Associates Ltd. (a SME located in Portishead, UK). The aim of the project was to develop a fieldable system for rapid detection and identification of a range of airborne biological agents.

The Microfluidics and Microengineering Group conducted research in a number of the core technologies incorporated into the PIBBDT system which has now been delivered to Dstl, Porton Down.
