Overview

Materials RSZWelcome to the Materials and Structures Research Group in CER

The Materials and Structures Research group specialises in research that focuses on the following main areas:

  • Advanced Materials Processing
  • Materials Joining Processes
  • Structural Integrity
  • Biomaterials, Nanoparticle functionalities and biological toxicity
  • C/C Composites
  • Natural fibre composites, formulation, processing and characterisation
  • Radioactive waste management

The group currently includes four academic members of staff, one Research Fellow and twelve postgraduate research students. During the last ten years, our research work has been supported with grants from the European Union, EPSRC, DTI, EEDA and industry. We participated in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in General Engineering as part of the UH submission whose work was rated 15% grade 4 (world-leading) and 35% grade 3 (internationally recognised).

The group is involved in several international collaborations and is an inaugural member of the European Virtual Institute on Knowledge-based Multi-component Materials which was formed after completion of the FP6-funded Network-of-Excellence in the same area.
